Wombat Mange is a disease caused by the sarcoptes scabiei mite. The mite burrows into the skin of its host causing thick crusty skin and hair loss. It is so itchy and wombats can injure themselves trying to scratch because of their sharp claws. Mange can result in death and blindness for a wombat. It takes roughly 3 months of weekly doses of moxidectin to treat a wombat with mange. By donating you will be helping buy the supplies we need to treat a wombat suffering with mange. Based off 3 months of treatment, it costs $200 to treat 1 wombat for mange. These costs include; Mange Flaps, wildlife monitoring cameras, Battery’s for cameras, blue dye, burrow markers, moxidectin, anti bacterial spray. Plus countless volunteer hours and kilometres driven weekly to treat wombats across multiple properties. This fundraiser is being run for WIRES Central West Branch. With all proceeds going to the treatment of wombats in the Central West, New South Wales. Whilst our main focus is on treating wombats with Mange. We are also licensed wildlife carers and have constant injured and sick animals in our care to rehabilitate ready for release. This takes a lot of hard work, both physically and emotionally and is all done on a volunteer basis. Currently in our care there’s Bert who suffered serious wombat attack wounds. Meg who was found all alone and malnourished. And Ivy who has a fractured femur and calcium deficiency. This means a lot of trips to the vets for X-rays and treatment plans. Funds raised all go to Kanimbla Wombats for the care of wombats.

Why are cameras so important to the work we do? *Mange treatments largely take place in the wild for a period of roughly 3 months where we need to be able to constantly monitor their wellbeing. *Whilst a wombat may traditionally be out during the day when they start their treatment for mange, when they start getting better they return to their nocturnal habits. Making it impossible to properly asses their health without a camera. *The most commonly used treatment method is a burrow flap with a cup filled with 20ml of cydectin. Without cameras we are unable to know if a wombat has received its dose, or if another wombat is also inhabiting the burrow (increasing the risk of that wombat also having mange or incorrectly dosing a wombat) *Wombats often tip the treatment on the ground or receive only half the dose, again with out cameras we are unaware of this information. With out cameras to tell us this information we are unable to know if we are appropriately treating the wombat.

I would like to thank everyone for your ongoing support both in sharing our posts to help educate the broader community and in contributing to our fundraising. Since starting this project we have managed to treat over a hundred wombats for mange across the Central West NSW (sometimes up to 5 wombats in 1 burrow!!). Because of the nature of mange and the lifespan of the scabies mites, it is so important that populations of wombats continue to be monitored even after they heal from mange. Because they can catch it all over again. That is why it is so important that everyone in the community knows what mange looks like. The more eyes on the ground the better!

Thankyou everyone for your continued support. We are still working to treat wombats suffering from mange in the central west NSW. The key indicator of mange is plaques of dry looking skin in vertical lines, Usually starting on their sides or legs. Wombats suffering from mange will develop thick crusts of skin over there bodies eventually covering their eyes and ears rendering them blind and deaf.

Thankyou all for your support, we have seen some amazing recoveries over the last few months and taken on even more sick wombats. Mange is such an awful disease but with all of your support we hope we can elevate the suffering of as many wombats as we can and keep them alive and well in the wild.
