Lamarca's Volunteer Optometry Care Trek to the Himalayas

I will be travelling for three weeks to volunteer in the Himalayas in September, and I am so excited to have Harrison join me. We will be trekking with our optometry equipment to remote villages in the Annapurna region, where we will work with other volunteer optometrists to set up a temporary clinic to test eyes, provide medical treatment for anterior eye disease, give glasses and identify patients who need referrals to ophthalmologists. Harrison will be working in the clinics alongside me, helping with case history and data collection.

The people of the remote Himalayan region of the Annapurna Sanctuary in Nepal have very limited access to primary health and in particular eye care. Eyes4Everest is a volunteer organisation who have coordinated optometrists missions to Nepal to help provide primary eyecare and prescription eyewear to the children and villagers who live there.

I am a mum of three boisterous boys, and have been an optometrist for over 20 years with the last 13 years working in Noosa. Harrison is in year 11, works at a local pharmacy and has ambitions to work in medicine. He has a caring and empathetic nature beyond his years and it was his idea to spend his savings to come along and volunteer.


All funds raised go directly to Eyes4Everest to help fund the mission and to building a sustainable eye clinic for the Sherpa people of Nepal.

Using my optometry skills to help those who are less fortunate is something I have wanted to do for many years, and both Harrison and I know that through this experience we can help to forever change the lives of the Himalayan people we see!
