Love for Alex

Let us tell you about little Alex. He is a cheeky three year old boy whose aim in life is to make you laugh. He’s a natural born comedian with the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face. His passions include play-doh, Peppa Pig and trains.

Late last year, following a month of illness which included vomiting, dizziness, lethargy and stumbling that was brushed off by several GPs as a childhood virus, he was rushed to The Women’s and Children’s hospital where fluid was discovered on his brain causing intra-cranial pressure. He underwent emergency surgery to alleviate the pressure which saved his life. However, the worst was still to come.

Following further surgery to perform a biopsy and an agonising ten day wait for the results, every parent’s worst nightmare was realised. Alex was diagnosed with Meduloblastoma – a rare and highly aggressive form of brain cancer. Alex’s life and that of his family changed forever.

Alex has since endured multiple further brain surgeries, each of which has carried an extremely high risk of complications. The stress on his parents and siblings who spent weeks by his side in intensive care has been immense. With the love and support of his family, Alex has managed to pull through the surgeries.

Alex is currently undergoing a gruelling regime of high-dose chemotherapy. Following a week in hospital for the therapy, he is often re-admitted due to complications and side effects. Alex and his parents are spending the majority of their time in hospital. He will soon undergo his final round of chemotherapy. There is hope that this will be the end of his treatment and he can resume a normal life. However, his family will again endure an agonising one month wait for his prognosis.

Throughout this ordeal, one thing has been constant – the love, care and support of Alex’s parents, Chris and Nelly. They have been by his side at every appointment, treatment and surgery without fail. There have been absolutely no breaks for them as Alex needs constant care. And if the current round of treatment doesn’t work then, as a last resort, Chris and Nelly have to take Alex interstate or overseas for further treatment.

Naturally Alex’s illness has taken a huge toll on Alex, his parents, and siblings. We often experience a sense of helplessness in situations like this. To help ease the burden and strain on Alex and his family, we are raising funds to assist them in their difficult journey.
