About

Unfortunately a sprained ankle lead to a number of back, hip and pelvis issues that have prevented me from walking as planned. Dreams never die but life takes us on all sorts of unplanned adventures that we have to roll with. Let's see if the possibility of this journey rolls around for me again.

On 1 September 2015, I will be taking my first steps walking to Jerusalem from Rome. I will walk the ancient pilgrimage routes, Via Appia and Via Egnatia, then find my own way along the Turkish coast as far as I safely can towards Syria before flying into Israel to walk the rest of the way into Jerusalem. This will be a journey of around 3,600 kilometres that I will walk alone.

If times were different, I would be walking through Syria and Jordan into Israel like many pilgrims before me. But I cannot. Syria is in crisis.

Since the conflict began in 2011, nearly 2 million Syrians have fled their homeland to seek refuge in nearby countries. More than 6 million have been displaced in their own country. More than 100,000 people have died. It is believed that up to 50% of the refugees are children.

Children are the future. But what is the future of these children, living in sparse refugee camps and having been through so much trauma?

I am grateful that I live in a peaceful country where I do not live in fear of my life. I have had access to education. I have been able to work and co-create many of the opportunities I have had in my life.

My motivation to walk to Jerusalem is for me first, something I feel called to do and it is self-funded. I appreciate that I can choose to do this and instead of feeling helpless and sickened by the horrors I see reported in the news almost everyday, I want to use this opportunity to do what I can to help by raising funds for the children of Syria.

My goal is modest, just $1 for each kilometre so a total of $3,600 but I would love to exceed this target.

This is my second long-distance walk. In 2013, I walked 2,022 kilometres from Canterbury in England to Rome following the pilgrimage route referred to as Via Francigena and raised money for Turtle Conservation. You can read more here https://www.mycause.com.au/page/62108

It took 84 days and I walked all, except the last 9 days into Rome, alone. It was at the end of this walk that I was inspired by my companions to walk to Jerusalem.

Thank you for reading and for your support. I will be blogging as I go and you can follow my journey here www.kymwilson.com.au
