Southern Africa 2014

Hi, I'm Holly Greet. I am using this website as a means to raise awareness and funds for the children of Southern Africa. I am lucky enough to be able to partake on a 3 month volunteer project throughout Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa with the help of Antipodeans Abroad and their 'All Out Africa' partners.

Swaziland has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world and as a result there are literally thousands of children who are now orphans or vulnerable because of this epidemic. My time in this small country therefore will be spent getting involved with the local community providing basic food, care and education at local orphanages and hospitals.

In South Africa, I will be based in Cape Town. This township faces immense social challenges with widespread poverty and communities ravaged by HIV Aids. Here, I will be working on childcare projects situated in the Imizamo Yethu Township helping with basic life skill training, teaching and supporting through care and attention.

It may sound like a cliche but I have always wanted to travel to Africa with a view to try to make a difference. Throughout the years I have become more and more passionate about this and decided to take a gap year in order to fulfil this desire. I believe no child should have to go through what some of these children have to endure every day and I somewhat admire them for it as they seem so resilient. I want to be able to physically get involved and see with my own eyes the difference it makes even if it is just giving love and attention to a child who normally doesn't get any at home or being able to add 5 new words to a child's vocabulary.

You can also be a part of this and see the difference you can make to these children's lives, especially those infected or affected by HIV /AIDS. You can do this by simply donating whatever you can afford to this page, and be assured that 100% of your donation will go directly to the community in need. Any donation great or small is warmly appreciated, the contribution you will make to the community is worthwhile and highly valued.

As little as $10 could provide medication for an HIV+ child in need for a month. Each donation will go towards a basic necessity such as that of health or education which we are lucky to have but sadly these children do not have access to.
