Packages For Homeless

Hello, my name is Thomas Hart, the funds co-ordinator for the ‘Packages for Homeless’ project. The project is a community-based group project which aims to supply care packages to the homeless of some of Australia’s major cities.

Seeing as you’ve reached our donations page, you’ve probably come from our Facebook page or our website,. However, if this is the first time you’ve heard of the project, or you’d like to find out more about it, I’ve included some more detailed information below.

"On any given night one in 200 Australians will experience homelessness."

We aim to make those nights a little less rough for those without a roof over their heads, and with a bit of help from you, we can make even more of a difference.

The Packages for Homeless project, an initiative of the Australian Nerdfighter community, began in early February 2014 with the aim of sourcing, packing, and distributing 200 care packages to the homeless in Australia’s major cities. These packages contain a selection of essential food, water, clothing items, and hygiene products, and will be packed into sturdy backpacks for the homeless to keep. Personally handed out by our dedicated volunteers during the week of June 21st, the longest night of the year, the packs will not only provide their recipients with the short-term relief of meals for a few days, but also with gifts which will help them for many weeks and months thereafter.

Through the generous donations of our MyCause donors, we will be able to cover the cost of assembling the care packs by ‘topping up’ our in-kind donations from companies and charities around Australia, as well as purchasing items which could not be sourced through our donors. A donation of just $25 will cover the cost of half a care package, supplying a person in need with everything from toothpaste to sunscreen to fresh fruit to handmade scarves. By reaching our goal of $7,500, we will have raised enough money to cover half of the cost of all the packs!
