In June 2025 I gave birth in the Birth Centre at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. In the midwifery group practice model I was supported and educated by a small team of midwives who believed in the power of an informed and autonomous birth. It was a beautiful experience that I am very grateful for. At the advice of my midwife I began working with a pelvic floor physiotherapist in my 3rd trimester, and continued seeing her after my birth.
My birth was amazing and I had a positive postpartum experience because I had access to this model of care. Unfortunately this isn't the case for the majority of women. My birth is the outlier! Some women don't even know that state funded midwifery is an option. I believe every mother deserves access to this level of care.
So on Sunday the 1st of November I will be running the Lakes Entrance Running Festival half marathon. For the women who made it possible for me to run and move my body free of issues, because of the education and autonomy they provided me with. And to give as many mothers as possible access to what they deserve. Informed and autonomous maternity care.
