Hola, my name is Manuel. I'm from Bucaramanga, Colombia, and Perth has been my home since 2022.
I didn't leave Colombia chasing an adventure. I left at 17 because criminal and political threats against my family over the years made staying impossible. Coming to Australia alone as a teenager, with a second language and no safety net, was the hardest thing I've ever done — but it gave me the chance to build a life in peace.
And I have built one. I work as a civil design drafter, I run a small drafting business on the side, and I'm working toward studying engineering. Most importantly, I met my wife, Emily. She has stood beside me through every step — every setback, every long week of juggling multiple jobs. Australia isn't just where I live anymore. It's where my family is.
Earlier this year, we lodged my partner visa application so we can stay together permanently. To make it happen, we had to borrow the full cost from generous people around us — some of it with interest that keeps growing. Those people trusted us when we had nowhere else to turn, and they now need their money back.
We've done everything we can on our own. I've taken extra work, we've cut back on everything, and Emily has carried more than anyone should have to. But with medical expenses on top of an already brutal year, we can't bridge this gap alone — and that's a hard thing to admit publicly.
Where your donation goes:
- Government partner visa application fee: $9,500
- Registered migration agent fees: $6,000
- Interest and repayment obligations on what we borrowed: ~$4,500
- Total: $20,000
Every dollar goes directly to repaying the people who helped us. If you can't donate, sharing this page with one person genuinely helps just as much.
Thank you for reading our story. Gracias de corazón.
