The Modern Overlanders is a purpose-driven cycling project created by two Central Coast GPs — Dr Arjun Shah and Dr Quinten Willemse. In April 2027, we will undertake our first major expedition, Cross Oz: an endurance ride from Perth, WA to the Central Coast, NSW, crossing thousands of kilometres of Australian landscape to raise funds and awareness for the The Debbie Gaunt Foundation and the The Humpty Dumpty Foundation.
Inspired by the courage and resilience of Australia’s original overlanders, this journey is about far more than cycling. It is about challenge, purpose, discipline, and using adventure to create meaningful impact. We are not professional athletes — just two ordinary working doctors with families, careers, and busy lives, proving that big goals and meaningful challenges are still possible alongside everyday responsibilities.
Over the next 12 months we will share the full reality of the journey — the training, preparation, setbacks, endurance, and the ride itself — while building awareness and support for two important causes. Transparency is central to everything we do: all donations go directly to the nominated charities, while sponsorship support helps cover the logistics and operational costs required to complete the expedition safely.
Cross Oz 2027 is only the beginning. The Modern Overlanders is being built as a long-term platform for future endurance cycling expeditions and purpose-driven adventures, both across Australia and internationally, combining modern adventure with meaningful purpose.
Note: The Iris Foundation Australia Limited is the governing body of The Debbie Gaunt Foundation. All proceeds raised here will go to The Debbie Gaunt Foundation.
