$My name is Dan and I have an amazing uncle called Paul. Paul and I both love cycling but unfortunately uncle Paul can’t ride much these days because he’s got Parkinson’s. I owe much of my love for cycling to Paul, he taught me what was possible on two wheels..
Paul lives near Young so I have decided to attempt riding from Lithgow to Young in one day (240km with lots of climbing) on the 6th of January to raise money for Parkinson’s NSW. I know it’s an expensive and busy time of year so any amount of support (monetary or moral) would be hugely appreciated! Thank you!

That’s a wrap! Thank you so much to my three amigos , Shaun, Fin and Simon who met me at Cowra..These three had already ridden in from Young on an extremely hot day. Absolute legends and a very big day on the pedals.
Uncle Paul and Cousin Mark met us 25km out from Young and drove as escort for us the whole way which was amazing. So good to see Paul and share a ride with him

First of all I’d like to say thank you and congratulations to everyone who donated, your money will go towards an extremely worthy cause helping people and their families living with Parkinson’s.
It’s been a bit of a journey personally the last few weeks. It all started with an idea whilst I was out on my bike, thinking about uncle Paul and wanting to catch up with him. My intention was to create something that brought Paul and myself together again through cycling, it’s been such a long time since we have seen each other and cycling is our shared passion so I thought it might be fun to create a bit of an event and maybe raise some money to help the broader community of people dealing with Parkinson’s. To be honest the response has been overwhelming! We truly didn’t expect the event to raise as much as it has.
Now comes the hard part…and I wish it was riding my bike. Two days after starting the fundraiser I injured my back at work. It laid me out flat for a week basically staring at the ceiling. I’ve never had a bad back before so I kept expecting it to just get better. The initial locked up spasming subsided leaving me with a persistent pain making long periods of cycling impossible. I’ll be getting scans to see what I’m dealing with but for now I’m just managing as best I can. I’m still planning on riding a small part of the distance and finishing in Young on the 6th. If you were planning on joining me during the ride I’ll be contacting the riders whose details I have with specific details.
I’m super disappointed to not be able to do the ride as planned, I was really looking forward to it but maybe there’s a deeper meaning here. 240km would have been a challenge but to be honest it was still inside my comfort zone..I’m pretty sure I would have done it. The last three weeks have been well outside of my comfort zone and frankly I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m not physically capable at this time..Then my thought go to those suffering through something like Parkinson’s..it puts everything back in to perspective. The ride is just a ride. What’s actually important - kindness, generosity, empathy, support and ultimately love are all still present. It’s these things that truly help others and you’ve all been a part of it. Thank you! Paul and Dans big ride rolls on!
