Connie's Stem Cell Therapy

Constance was born with severe hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele.

Doctors told us she wouldn't do most things and even offered hospice care at one point in NICCU when she was not even 2wks old.

Although Spina bifida is not curable, I believe in the bodies amazing ability to overcome and heal and there is always new research being done and new technology being invented that could benefit people with Spina bifida.

This is why we were so encouraged and excited to be given the green light to travel to Thailand to a special facility that incorporates stem cell therapy with many other therapies to fully assist the body to use the stem cells to the best of their ability in her body.

I have full confidence in this having a positive outcome for Constance and improving her quality of life with brain health, muscle strength and tone and also bladder and bowl control improvement.

Sadly this is all privately funded and is very costly for our family to achieve, so we are calling out to the community to help us raise the funds so we can fly within the year and keep helping Constance grow and improve.

The donations will fund the stem cell therapy which is 35-40k AUD and also the necessary flights to and from for Constance and both her mum and dad and then necessary food for us while there and any necessary medical insurance cover.

With more and more research and information coming out we have changed directions and will be travelling first to Mexico to receive the amazing new Muse stem cells. What are MUSE cells, and why do we have hope? MUSE (Multilineage-differentiating Stress-Enduring) cells were discovered by Japanese researcher Dr. Mari Dezawa at Tohoku University. What makes them different from other stem cells is that they can sense damaged tissue and travel directly to it - they carry receptors that respond to a signal injured cells release, so when they're given intravenously, they're drawn to the actual site of injury rather than just circulating generally. Given intranasally, they have a direct nose-to-brain route that bypasses the blood-brain barrier altogether. This isn't a fringe idea. MUSE cells have already been through clinical trials in Japan for stroke and for newborn brain injury from oxygen deprivation, with encouraging safety results and signs of improved recovery. That research is part of why we feel hopeful, even though we know this treatment is still considered investigational and isn't yet a guaranteed cure - no one can promise us an outcome, and we're not pretending otherwise. What we do know is that Connie's brain and body is young, and a young, developing brain and body has the greatest capacity to rewire, strengthen and adapt. That's exactly why we want to give her this chance now, while that window is wide open, instead of waiting years for it to possibly become available at home. Our hope is simple, even if it's not guaranteed: that with every bit of extra capacity we can give her body, Connie gets the chance to learn the skills that lead to real independence. Things other families take for granted - being toilet trained, being able to walk independently, able to read and write. not needing someone else to do everything for her. That's what we're working toward, for the years Keelan and I are here to support her, and for the years after we're not.
