Meet my friend Nikki. She’s one of the kindest, nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met.
She is only 40 and now facing her 2nd battle with a rare, aggressive cancer— and urgently needs your help.
She is so brave. She survived Ewings Sarcoma by enduring 14 rounds of intense chemotherapy, over the covid years in Melbourne—which meant she was often suffering in isolation. Despite this she never lost her ability to make everyone around her smile.
But the very treatment that saved her life has caused Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML)—an extremely rare, aggressive, and now terminal blood cancer.
She grew up in NZ, but has lived in Melbourne for the last 18 years. After her remission she slowly started to rebuild her life. But then, after only two years faced this devastating new diagnosis.
As if being diagnosed with two rare cancers wasn’t enough, Nikki carries a molecular mutation that only 25 people in the world have been documented with in the past 20 years.
This means there is extremely limited information or research to guide treatment, and she’s been given only a 20-25% chance of making it another 5 years. That said, Nikki is a fighter, and doesn’t give up.
She’s taking daily oral chemotherapy, and while there’s no guarantee how long it will work she is giving getting better everything she has. There are always new treatments and we are hopeful that something will help.
Nikki has had to deplete all of her savings. She’s always been a hard worker but between hospital stays, side effects, and stress, it’s become impossible. She continued working but her employer terminated her due to illness.
The funds raised here will go toward her rent, food, essential living costs, medical expenses, and transport to hospital for ongoing treatment.
It’s so incredibly important for Nikki to be able to continue living in her apartment with her Frenchie dog Maverick and two cats. Staying in the building where so many of her neighbours are friends offers a sense of normalcy and support.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read Nikki’s story.
