The family returned from an outing to the park on Sunday afternoon to find their 15 year old and dog on the lawn and the house engulfed in flames. There was no opportunity to save anything before the house was completely consumed. The family have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the cars they were driving.
Only weeks ago this family faced the sudden and traumatic loss of their mother. The remaining seven family members include five foster children, of primary and high school age, and a father with advanced MS. The adult son has been doing a remarkable job to keep the family together.
It was devastating to see the additional psychological impact of this fire on a family already under such pressure.
Whilst the family are tremendously grateful to all be okay physically, they face a significant battle to restabilsh their lives after such devastating loss. The children have lost cherished items from their prior lives that can never be replaced, as well as all their everyday items from clothing to toothbrushes, bsckpacks to ipads/laptops. There is also significant medical equipment that is needed by the father for daily living, and to care for the children (e.g. mobility scooter to walk the youngest children to and from school). As systems (such as foster care agencies and NDIS) can take time mobilise, I am hoping to raise some immediate funds to meet the families basic needs and provide other items to assist their wellbeing in the immediate aftermath of the fire.
It's times like these, when people in our community are touch by tragedy, we are reminded how fortunate we are for the basics we take for granted. There is always something we can all do to make things a little easier for others.
If everyone who sees this were to donate even a few dollars, it would add up to a sum that could make a tremendous difference for this family.
