About

UPDATED
After 8 years of being in my life, my furry companion, Sesame, has crossed the Rainbow Bridge to become a Valkyrie. She had developed high blood pressure, after which her kidneys rapidly failed. She passed peacefully and loved.

Vet visits and medication, both started before her prognosis deteriorated, totalled over $5000. Unfortunately, she developed serious side-effects from her first blood pressure medication. We suspected kidney troubles might have been caused by the medication as well, and could be treated by flushing them out, but it appears her kidneys were damaged or diseased.

= OUR STORY =

Sesame and I met at Squishies Animal Rescue in February 2016, when she was around 4 or 5 years old, and immediately felt a connection to each other. We became family shortly after, and she moved in with me.

She was always a polite, quiet cat, not wanting to get in anyone's way—even other cats—and often showed interest in helping with whatever I'm doing. She responded to my moods, being loving and caring when they were low, and got excited when I was happy or productive. She liked to sit near me when I cooked my dinner, or worked in my study, providing moral support.

She appreciated all the ways I looked after her, and tried her hardest to find ways to reciprocate. She told me if I was staying up too late, or if I was late to get my dinner. On more than one occasion, she brought dry biscuits from her food bowl to my room, so that she could eat them at me, reminding me to get my own meal.

In 2020, while separated due to lockdown situations, I developed type-1 diabetes. Once reunited near the end of the year, she rapidly taught herself to read my blood sugars. She would warn me when my sugars were dropping even before I noticed myself, and try to get me to lie down if my sugars got too high.

= THE JOURNEY TO NOW =

Recently, Sesame's eyesight rapidly deteriorated. Diagnostic tests (9 July 2024) revealed that she had bleeding in both eyes and detached retinas, caused by high blood pressure. Blood tests showed that she was otherwise healthy. Her thyroid, liver, and kidneys appeared to be functioning well, and she was not diabetic.

However, after being put on a medication for her blood pressure, she developed rare side-effects (3 out of 4), and became thoroughly unwell. Blood tests revealed highly abnormal kidney markers, but degenerative kidney disease was not diagnostically apparent. She was administered fluids to flush her kidneys, with the hope that it was some part of the medication that had collected there, and that she would recover.

Her treatment was quite promising at first. She was clearly feeling a lot better, though not fully back to normal. But after a few days, her condition rapidly declined. Blood tests revealed worse kidney markers, and she was hospitalised at the vet for continuous, intravenous fluids. Once again, she appeared to respond well, being chatty with the vets, and returning to eating normally.

Unfortunately, by 6 September, her kidney markers had not improved. She underwent diagnostic tests, including ultrasound and X-ray, looking for any blockage in or around the kidneys. None was discovered, and she was formally diagnosed with degenerative kidney disease.

On the morning of Saturday, 7 September, my partner and I said our last goodbyes to Sesame, and reassured her that we would be OK, and we'd look after each other. She was happy to see us, purring and giving us enthusiastic nose-boops, but clearly also exhausted from treatment. She passed peacefully and comfortably, with her favourite cuddle-buddy toys attending.

Vet visits included:
* Consultation on 27 June, testing eye pressure, blood, and urine, medicating with eye drops ($639)
* Follow-up consultation on 1 July, testing eye pressure, medicating with oral anti-inflammatories ($200)
* Specialist eye examination on 9 July, testing eye pressure, and blood pressure, medicating with blood pressure pills, and continuing with eye drops ($439)
* Specialist follow-up on 17 July, testing light response, and blood pressure ($285)
* Consultation on 31 August with severe dehydration and weight loss, testing blood and urine, administered subcutaneous fluids ($596)
* Consultation on 2 September, administered subcutaneous fluids ($168)
* Hospitalisation beginning 4 September, intravenous fluid therapy, pain relief, nausea medication, euthanasia 7 September, and cremation ($2958)
Total: $5285

Sesame looked after me remarkably well for most of her life, and my partner and I gave her all the love and medical care she needed and deserved. However, I am unable to work. I live on the Disability Support Pension, and have no savings I can reallocate to fund the vet visits and hospitalisation in her final days.

If you are able to make a contribution, no matter how small, in memory of the best tiny squish Sesame, we will all be immensely grateful to you.
