About
Hello,
My name is Jessica and I am running the Kangaroo Island half marathon on September 8th 2024 to raise much needed awareness for a rare, severe and lifelong speech condition called Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).
My son, Henry, has this condition that affects 1-2 in 1000 children. With this condition the person knows exactly what they want to say but when they go to speak, their mouth, tongue and jaw have trouble co-ordinating to get the words out. This is extremely frustrating for them. Children with CAS require intense and frequent speech therapy to help them learn to speak.
I will be running top to toe in blue, the colour of Apraxia awareness and will have Apraxia written on every surface I can. With the money I am able to raise I am going to be buying Apraxia awareness books to put in libraries and classrooms (hopefully across Australia). I will also be purchasing Apraxia awareness apparel for families who were unable to purchase this for themselves. All profit from these purchases go back in to Apraxia awareness.
I truly believe that with knowledge comes understanding and acceptance. That is why I am running, so people talk about Apraxia and want to learn more about it, and because everyone deserves a voice.
