Raising funds for: Madeline
Madeline (78 years old) (Also known as Mal, Gran & Mum) arrived in Australia on a 12 month holiday Subclass 600 visa in April 2023, after 10 years of not seeing her family. She was so excited to come to Australia, as we have a few big birthday celebrations in the family this year and she was so desperate to come and share them with her grandchildren. The covid lock downs and travel restrictions prevented her from coming to visit any sooner. On the 14th of June, Mal got up to start her day as usual, when she had a major stroke from a 6mm cerebellar clot in her brain. Our children were home with her at the time thankfully, and managed to call for medical help on triple 000. She was transferred to hospital where the CT scans discovered her catastrophic cerebellar clot. To explain what stroke she had - "A cerebellar stroke occurs when there is bleeding or blockage of a blood vessel in part of the brain called the cerebellum, affecting healthy blood flow to the area. Cerebellar strokes are dangerous and may cause serious complications both because of the cerebellum's location and its involvement in physical movements and cognition" The stroke has left Mal completely bedridden, severely disabled and needing full-time care. She is paralysed on her whole left side, and she is unable to eat, swallow, drink, talk properly - we only understand basic words, walk, sit, or stand etc. and the challenge we are facing is that she currently has no Government support not being a resident or Citizen of Australia, shes on a visitor Subclass 600 visa. Her hospital bills are piling up as she is required to stay in the Stroke unit at Canberra Hospital, we have also been told that once she is stable enough to leave, she will require further extensive and lengthy rehabilitation to get back some of her most basic human motor skills. We are reaching out for financial help and support for a very difficult and complex situation, to help us support Mum/Mal. She doesn’t have any other family support available to her in South Africa nor will she be in any condition to be able to fly back in the foreseeable future. She came from very poor living conditions back in her home country, so we are doing everything we can to give her the best support and care she deserves. Her welfare is a humanitarian concern at this stage. We have no where else to turn for help, so we are reaching out to the community for any help. The funds we are hoping to raise, are for her medical equipment and ongoing rehabilitation costs, as well as obtaining a medical visa (via an immigration lawyer) for her to stay in Australia with her family, while she continues to receive the care she so desperately needs. She has had the PEG Feeding system installed now, there will be monthly ongoing fees for her feeding cartridges and replacement tubes for the feeding machine. We have been researching our options to get setup with home care, as she will not be able to stay in hospital much longer, with no government funding, this makes it very challenging to help support her medical needs. We will need to obtain "at home" medical equipment to be able to support her severe disability, as well as potentially a full time carer for her. ? Any help and support would be much appreciated by Mal and her family. Its extremely heartbreaking and difficult to see someone you love in this state. Nothing in life can prepare you for this type of event. As a family we are eternally grateful for any help and support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has already donated to Mal's cause. May you and your families all be blessed in abundance for your kindness and generosity.

Today we are writing with a very heavy heart and with incredible sadness, as our beloved Mum, Madeline (Mal), sadly passed away after falling very ill last week Thursday. Mum was a very special lady who captured the hearts of everyone around her, she will be in our hearts and memories forever. She had been through alot the last few months after suffering from her severe stroke in June which left her with disabilities, we did everything we could to try and help her get better. Mum, it was time for you to have peace and rest, your body was tired, I wish we had more time with you so that we could spoil you and show you how special you were to us. God needed another Angel in heaven, and HE chose you. To my husband Andre, you have been incredibly strong and brave through this whole event, your mum would be so proud you. Juggling work, family life and your mums severe condition which was very confronting, at her bedside everyday making sure she was ok. I am so proud of you too, you're an incredible man to take that all on and I know you only wanted the best for her life. I pray for peace and rest over you, as you grieve your mum and know that we are all with you in love and in the spirit, at your side. To mums children (Andre', Sven & Dieter) and grandchildren - you were all incredibly loved by her, near and far. You were all always in her heart. Treasure those memories forever. To all her family and friends, thank you for all the support you provided to our family over the last few months. We honestly couldn't have done this without the help and support we received from everyone. It was honestly one of the most challenging and confronting situations we have all ever experienced. Nothing in life could have ever prepared us for what happened. To all the strangers in the community that jumped on her cause to help support her situation, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and generosity, I pray that you are all blessed in abundance for your giving hearts. It honestly gave us hope in humanity and I know Mum was so grateful for all the help. RIP beautiful mum, we will cherish your memories forever.

I haven't added an update for a while, as there has been alot going on with mum which we have been trying to navigate and organize for her. She was discharged from the Rehabilitation hospital 3 weeks ago and moved to a Respite Care Facility an hour away from home, which the Social workers at the hospital managed to get approved for her, but unfortunately this is only a temporary solution (6 weeks). The rehabilitation center unfortunately told us there was nothing further they could do for her, her rehabilitation attempts were unsuccessful, which was why they could not keep her there any longer. Her condition is still pretty much the same - severely disabled and completely bed ridden, we have seen a deterioration in her speech and have been struggling to understand her as time goes by, especially when they have given her pain medication, it slows her functions right down. She is in alot of pain, her body is sore from being bed ridden for so long, we have been working with the nurses to ensure she moves to her chair in the day so she can get out of her room and bed a little, just to go sit in the sun or watch some TV with other people. We take those little pleasures for granted. We are not sure at this stage where she will go from here, we have to just take 1 day at a time and focus on her current medical needs. She's still receiving full time care. (Unable to walk, sit, stand, eat, talk etc) Her hair was getting very matted and long from being in bed for such a long time, so I organized for my lovely hairdresser friend to take a trip with us and cut her hair into a bob, which will be easier to manage. We propped her up in her wheelchair and managed to get it done for her. She was very happy, so HUGE thank you to Alysha, my friend. You are an absolute Angel. We are continuing to research her visa options as a priority, so that we can help to get her the medical support she so desperately needs here in Australia. Thank you to everyone who has kindly donated to Mum's cause, our family is honestly so grateful and humbled for all the support and kindness you have all shown. We have been buying her much needed medical equipment, PEG feeds and consumables to be able to support her severe condition. A stroke is a horrific thing to happen to anyone and I ask that you continue to keep her in all your prayers. xxx Love to you all, The Hauser Family

Mum/Mal is still at the UCH Rehabilitation Hospital in Canberra. We had another setback on the weekend as she contracted Pneumonia. Unfortunately with her swallowing issues, she is aspirating her saliva, so it is causing an infection in her lungs. They were able to clear it out with anti-biotics, before it got too serious. Her rehabilitation is a very slow process, at this stage, they are trying to provide her with the tools to communicate with us via an ipad and alphabet card. There is not much hope for her to regain many of her motor skills/functions - like walking, sitting, standing talking, eating, she will require full time care once she is discharged from rehab. This is causing our family alot of ongoing distress as we try to manage the best way to support her once she leaves hospital. It is alot to digest and medical is very costly, but all we can do is deal with one day at a time. We have about 2 weeks left at UCH, so we are unsure at this stage where she will go from there, there is a very high possibility she will have to come home. Please continue to keep our family and Mal in your prayers, this is an incredibly complex and difficult situation we are facing. Once again, huge thank you to everyone who has very generously donated to Mal's cause, we are honestly so grateful, we could not do this on our own without all the support.

Mal was moved to the Canberra University Rehabilitation Hospital last week. The Occupational therapists have been doing some therapy with her, to see if there is going to be any possibility for her to regain some of her motor skills/movements. She has shown some positive cognitive signs with her memory and they are focusing on trying to provide her with the tools to communicate with her right hand using an alphabet and sign/display cards, however her mobility is still not progressing as we were hoping it would, her left side is still paralyzed and has shown no sign of improvement. As you all know, with a stroke, there is a golden window for this type of recovery after a stroke and we are unfortunately well past that golden window of opportunity for any major recovery. Mal has 3 more weeks at the Rehabilitation centre, after she is discharged from there, she will potentially have to return to our care at home. Please continue to keep us in your prayers, as you can imagine this is alot to take on, as it will all have to be be self funded/out of pocket with her visitor visa status, she gets no Government support here in Australia. It has left our family under alot of distress and concern. Medical equipment is very costly and there will be ongoing costs to be able to support her at home. Some of the items we are going to have to purchase for her: Medical equipment: - Patient bed - Patient lifter/Hoist - Wheelchair - she needs a special one with more support as she can't sit and hold herself up - Shower/toilet chair Ongoing costs: - Nappies & bed pads - Oral hygiene items - she requires special items as she can't swallow - Feeding Cartridges (For her PEG) - $600+ per month - Accessories for her PEG - Tubes/Syringes etc - Waterproof bedding - Nurse / Carer to help us I'm sure there will be more items, these are just the things we have been made aware of. We also have to potentially move house soon, as our house will not support a disabled person, we have multiple stairs and the showers are small, so much to consider to be setup for a disabled person. I want to thank you all once again for your very generous donations to her cause. We would honestly not be able to do this on our own.

Just wanted to provide an update on Mum/Mal. She had her PEG surgery on Friday, everything went well. She is back in stroke ward recovering at the moment, shes been very tired, sore and groggy from the anesthetic over the weekend, so hopefully she will regain some energy this week to continue with her rehabilitation. It has affected her speech alot and we are struggling to understand basic words still. We are hoping that will improve this week as she recovers from these setbacks. We are continuously working with her Doctors to get approval for her to move to the rehabilitation hospital. It has been very challenging as she was ill with Covid and has now had another minor setback with the surgery. Time is critical with stroke patients, but we remain hopeful and optimistic, thats all we can do at this stage. Here is a photo from last week, my husband bought her a magazine and he sat her up in the chair to try and get her to read a little. She is trying so incredibly hard and we are so proud of all of her small achievements everyday over the last 10 weeks. She has a strong fighting spirit and a will to live, so we will continue to fight for her through this, through every challenge and obstacle. We still face many challenges for her and as a family. Thank you again to everyone for all your love and support, we are eternally grateful. May you all be blessed in abundance for your kindness and generosity to help this lovely old lady, we call Mum.

Madeline had a setback last week, she contracted Covid in the hospital and was put into isolation. They had to get her back onto oxygen and place her physiotherapy sessions on hold for her to recover. The speech pathologist did more testing on her yesterday, unfortunately she keeps failing her swallowing tests, which means they are now reviewing getting her onto the PEG feeding solution, which will be a more permanent solution. ("PEG stands for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, a procedure in which a flexible feeding tube is placed through the abdominal wall and into the stomach. PEG allows nutrition, fluids and/or medications to be put directly into the stomach, bypassing the mouth and esophagus") We have also been told that there is a high possibility she will not be admitted into the rehabilitation hospital at this stage, due to her slow recovery and pending insurance approvals. This ultimately means that we are going to have to review other care & recovery options to support her full time. This is causing our family alot of distress as you can imagine, Madeline is on a visitor visa so she doesn't qualify for any help from the government. We are currently working with the social workers at the hospital to help educate us for the future, so we can prepare for the new challenges we are facing to arrange care for her. I want to take this opportunity again to thank everyone for all the ongoing support, your generosity and kind words, it means so much to our family through these challenges.
