Inside, Outside – raising money for people experiencing homelessness by walking in their shoes.
More than 7,000 South Australians are experiencing homelessness, and thousands more are at risk.
For 7 days and 7 nights, I am going to fundraise for these people by walking in their shoes. I will be spending a week on the streets of Adelaide in deep winter. with only a blanket and the clothes on my back. No backing out. No risks managed. The only difference between me and the people I will meet, is that I go home at the end of it. They do not.
CRUCIAL SUPPORT FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION RECOVERY
The funds raised will support people through physical resources such as blankets, heat packs and food, and crucially, will provide Mental Health and Addiction coaching to directly impact the people who need it most. As a mental health and addiction recovery coach who has previously battled addictions and displacement myself, I know full well how difficult it is to balance these challenges while trying to rebuild a life, and the impact that the right support can provide.
HOMELESSNESS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE.
I first visited Australia from the UK in 2003. Landing in Sydney, I was confronted by a level of homelessness far more extreme than I had ever seen back home. I chose to spend my 21st birthday sitting and speaking with various people who were sleeping rough, offering them food and listening intently to their stories of how they got there. I met many that night, including those who been millionaires but through a cruel twist of fate, their luxuries had turned into tragedy. It made me realise it can happen to anyone, at any time and for any reason.
Fast forward to today, and we are facing an unprecedented series of global events and nationwide problems that could displace anyone, at any time. This is as real as it gets, and as the mortgage cliff edge nears daily, 10's of 1000's of hard-working Australian families could be the next faces you walk past on your way to work, huddled in doorways for shelter without their basic needs met.
This country gave me a second chance at building the life I dreamt of back in the cold dark winters of the UK. I’ve battled addictions and displacement and seen the darkest sides of life both personally and professionally. Now it’s time to give back to a country, and a world, that blessed me with life, and take a leap of faith.
FILMING AND SHARING MY JOURNEY
Using a GoPro, I also plan to film my journey and show you the ups and downs I experience; navigating the elements, risks, hardships and pressure on my Mental Health. We hope to give you a true representation of what it’s really like for someone you walk past daily on your way to work. We are also currently seeking out a producer willing to bring this documentary to life.
Why am I doing this? Why not! I’ve been blessed with a life to use in service of others, and projects like this fill me with the hope of what one person can do for every person.
There will be no monetary gains from this for us at all. All your money will go directly to the people I stand for. My wealth will be from giving my time and love to people who need it most.
Never look down on someone unless you are helping them up.
We look forward to you joining us on this journey and are eternally grateful for your kind support and donations.
