In June I am taking part in the Tour Divide mountain bike race which starts in Banff, Canada (on 9th June), and travels the length of the US, finishing at the border of Mexico - a distance of over 4,400km! I'm raising much-needed funds for Free the Bears, a Perth, Australia-based charity founded by Dr Mary Hutton, rescuing bears from the illegal wildlife trade and bear bile farming in Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam. Free the Bears cares for over 270 bears in the sanctuaries, and each bear costs $AU3000 to feed and care for, per year. I'm aiming to raise $AU10,000 from my ride, just over $2 for every km I will be cycling on Tour Divide! This will help Free the Bears rescue and care for more bears. There are still around 220 bears trapped in tiny cages on bile farms in Vietnam - we need to rescue them before it's too late! Free the Bears recently rescued a bear from a bile farm who'd been in a small cage for 22 years - can you imagine? I'm using the freedom of bike travel to raise awareness and funds to help stop this cruel practise. Though I'm choosing to do this race, it won't be easy. I will be riding solo and unsupported, and it's a non-stop race. The route goes through remote and rugged terrain, over passes that may have snow, and through the desert heat in the south. I will be riding as fast as possible but aim to complete 20 days or less - that means cycling over 200km per day on gravel roads and trails, and sleeping very little. Hopefully the wild North American bears will leave me alone while I'm fundraising for their relatives in Asia! ;) Donations of any amount are much appreciated. Thank you for your support for my ride and for the bears!

I finished the Tour Divide race a few days ago with a time of 18 days and just over 11 hours, and in 3rd equal women’s. Here’s my finishing photo - yep I certainly needed a shower! I rode 4,300km from Banff in Canada, through 2 Canadian states and 5 US states to get to the border of Mexico at Antelope Wells, New Mexico. What a journey! The weather was relatively kind to me but I still experienced heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, snow on the ground to walk my bike through, strong side/head winds, cold temperatures down to zero degrees C and heat getting up near 40 deg C. I didn’t sleep all that much (3-4 hours per night) and I (clearly, from the photo!) barely showered. I climbed over 50,000m and crossed the continental divide over 30 times, going up to 3,600m above sea level. I wore my bear hat most of the time except for in the heat of New Mexico - it was a great conversation starter! I rode through so many different and beautiful landscapes, saw a lot of wildlife including elk, moose, deer, pronghorn antelope, marmots, pika, squirrels, kangaroo rats, weasels and more. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported my ride for Free the Bears - I have surpassed my fundraising goal! I am most grateful for your support and I know this will assist Free the Bears greatly in helping free more bears from bile farms and the illegal wildlife trade, and help care for the 275+ bears they’ve already rescued whom reside in the sanctuaries.

Thank you so much to everyone for so generously supporting my Tour Divide race for Free the Bears! I’ve now surpassed the $AU3000 mark which is fantastic. I’ll be wearing the bear hat (pictured above - it fits over my helmet) that was kindly made by Free the Bears Albany volunteer, Jeannie. And my specially-made Free the Bears cycling jersey sponsored by the wonderful Jeanette (Free the Bears volunteer coordinator) in Sydney! Last week I was in the local Armadale Examiner newspaper. Read it here (page 9): https://view.publitas.com/examiner-newspapers/armadale-examiner-newspapers-25th-may-2023/page/8-9 Today I’m flying to Canada ready for the race start next Fri 9th June. During the race you should be able to follow my progress on this link: https://trackleaders.com/tourdivide23f.php Thank you for all your well wishes for my ride and your amazing support once again! Love Sacha-bear :)
