Raising funds for: Stop the Great Wall of Frankston
This group advocates for the advancement of our beautiful city through strategic planning and sensitive development which celebrate our natural coastal jewels - the beach and creek. Our community groups are challenging Frankston City Council at VCAT for their approval of a 14 storey high-rise development. The proposed site is in the waterfront precinct running alongside the Kananook Creek and within 200m of the coastline. A building of this magnitude is likely to set a precedent for more, and this will not only change the valued beachside character but will create a barrier between Frankston’s prized waterfront assets and its city centre. Already there is a further application for 16 storeys on the adjoining site which is now also awaiting a decision at VCAT. We are greatly concerned about the amenity and environmental impacts this will have, including overshadowing of the waterway affecting aquatic biodiversity and street vegetation, wind downdrafts, heat island effects and the marring of views from our iconic Olivers Hill and from across the bay. Please help us protect what we love and cherish about our unique coastal city and the legacy we leave for future generations. There is a way for us to develop our city, without compromising what we treasure and what makes us a place where people want to live, work and visit. We need your help. Please donate, no matter how small. Together our coastal communities will have a voice. This will have implications right around Port Phillip Bay. If you have any questions or queries, feel free to reach out to us at stopthegreatwall@gmail.com. If you haven't already done so you can also sign our petition https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-great-wall-of-frankston Thanks for your support in helping protect this coastal environment.

PLEASE SEND YOUR THANKS TO PLANNING MINISTER SONYA KILKENNY It has taken the Minister’s intervention to achieve the first step to returning mandatory height protections to Frankston’s coastal location similar to other neighbouring bayside municipalities. For this the Minister deserves our thanks and praise. Please email the Planning Minister at reception.kilkenny@transport.vic.gov.au congratulating Ms Kilkenny on her decision to introduce an Interim Design and Development Overlay which includes mandatory height limits of 3 storeys on the small section of land between Kananook Creek Boulevard and Nepean Highway. She has delivered an important breakthrough, not just for Frankston, but the broader community in knowing our elected representatives are committed to protecting our shared environmental and coastal assets. The sensitive coastal environment around Port Phillip Bay deserves this protection. We still have a long way to go to ensure these interim controls transition into more permanent protections so please let the Minister know the community welcomes and supports her decision. You have been vital in achieving this outcome thus far, so please spend a couple more minutes of your time to send a message of thanks to the Minister and feel free to copy us at stopthegreatwall@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/stgwfrankston for further updates and information. Our group of volunteers thanks you for your generosity and ongoing support.

RALLY SATURDAY 13 MAY 2023 10.30AM JOIN US AT CNR WELLS ST & KANANOOK CREEK FRANKSTON (REF 101 WELLS ST) Mistakes have been made in the past resulting in overwhelming structures that have prevented us from making the most of our unique waterfront location. Are we about to make mistakes on an even grander scale by allowing far higher, view blocking and amenity robbing towers of 12, 14, 16 storeys and up to 60 metres height in the Waterfront Precinct and only 200 metres from our scenic coastline? These towers will overshadow Kananook Creek, the beach, nearby homes, exacerbate wind tunnel effects and change the face of Frankston forever. Back in 2017, Frankston Councillors voted to adopt 20 metre height limits for its waterfront precinct. Yet in 2023, Frankston Council is considering adopting a Structure Plan with much higher “preferred limits” that will leave Frankston’s waterfront vulnerable to massive overdevelopment. Other Bayside Councils around Port Phillip Bay have mandatory height limits of 2-3 storeys for their coastal areas and Frankston’s waterfront deserves the same protection. Community groups including Frankston Beach Association, Kananook Creek Association, Long Island Residents Group, Mornington Environment Association and Port Phillip Conservation Council are asking Planning Minister The Hon. Sonya Kilkenny; Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke; and Frankston City Councillors to act now to protect Frankston’s coastal amenity by implementing mandatory height limits for Frankston’s waterfront. At our rally you will hear from Planning experts Professor Michael Buxton RMIT Emeritus Professor of Environment & Planning and former Federal MP The Hon. Kelvin Thomson Convenor of Planning Democracy, who will speak on what is planned for Frankston, and what could be done so much better. Other informed speakers will also be in attendance. Please join us to hear from these important speakers. Our community alliance is determined to stop these overbearing developments on Frankston’s much loved waterfront overlooking Frankston’s beautiful natural beach, dominating coastal scenery, and blocking views for the City Centre and beyond. See you at the rally with placards and signs and let Council know that we say NO to current proposals to allow excessive heights at the waterfront. We need a plan instead to showcase Frankston’s greatest natural assets – the beach, waterway and iconic views. Thank you very much for your support and follow us on Facebook for more information.

Climate change, sea level rise/flooding, high value of Kananook Creek - especially seagrass, should see this inappropriate high rise development expunged. Return the whole area to an urban park - Government buy-back - be a world class tourist attraction.

Council should have foresight and be buying back the land currently owned by businesses bordering the Kananook Creek (many are vacant shops) and turn back into parkland for current and future generations to enjoy. Development here is not ecologically sound, please consider placing much needed housing the other Frankston CBD side of Nepean Highway.
