On 17 December 2022 we visited a disaster refugee camp in Cianjur, Java with funds gifted to my wife from coworkers and friends. We we unsure how the money should be spent. We didn't want to just drop it into the lap of a relief agency, never knowing how that money would be spent or if it would make a difference. But we met 17 families - all sharing the same tent. We were overwhelmed by their warmth, their friendliness and the generosity with which they share their experiences - always with a smile and laughter. This is where we want to make our difference - by improving their lives to help them to meet the challenge of beginning again.
The full force of the earthquake has passed despite more than 300 aftershocks and the attention of the world has moved on. On December 20th they'll receive a final assistance package and that's it. They're on their own.
They tell us the nights are cold and they lack any bedding. There is a lack of diapers for the small children in the camp. Day to day non-perishable food is a must. And the camp is full of children with nothing to do - no way to entertain themselves or learn.
These are all problems that can be fixed and we intend to do what we can. A bedroll for 3 can be purchased less than 10 kilometers away for eleven Australian dollars. Two blankets and pillows can be added for 17 Australian dollars so $28 Australian dollars can provide a family of three with warmth and a degree of comfort for the cold, rainy, mountain weather.
We will return this Thursday 22 December - 3 days before Christmas, with whatever aid we can provide as a family. But we want to keep that aid coming over the month ahead and this is where you come in.
We won't wait until the campaign ends for funds to become available. Once a week we will spend whatever has been donated from our own account to ensure the aid keeps coming.
This Christmas be a part of something real and give a gift that will make a real impact in the lives that receive it. Give gifts that meet a real and urgent need. Give the opportunity to move forward from absolute loss and disaster. And just as importantly - give the knowledge that others care and that strangers from another are making sure that the needs of these families are met.
