Since January 2022 Tasmanian man Samuel McLennan has hand built a raft from rubbish. The rubbish has been found in the marine environment of Turrakana (Tasman Peninsula) and Lutriwita (Tasmania) and putting the pieces together (to make an ocean going vessel) has been no easy feat. After hundreds of challenges, he's now on the maiden voyage from Hobart to Sydney and he's taking on the big waves, big winds and dangerous waters to be a catalyst for the changes most of us want to see. The majority of us are sick and tired of the direction that we are heading as a planet (and as a species). We can easily see there's increasing amounts of people struggling to survive. Mental health issues are rising rapidly, the natural environment is getting polluted and destroyed and people don't trust many of the leaders we currently have. Samuel see's a simple correlation: unhealthy (unhappy) people create an unhealthy (unhappy) environment. Scientists say that we are the only living species that creates a toxic environment to live in. This is really bad news for us now, future generations, nearly every other living organism and the future of the planet. Samuel says "enough is enough" and is making a massive effort to cause the changes we all want to see: - People and environments increasing in health. During the journey he will stop at townships en-route to have important conversations about responsibility, integrity, authenticity, sustainability, creativity and many more. Community and support has been building as people hear Samuel’s story - they become inspired, motivated to take action and find the courage to stand up to say ‘no more’. Samuel has sponsors providing some equipment for the journey but the rest has been self funded - he has lived in his vehicle for years and gets food from places like the Salvation Army and community houses. Will you choose to support cleaning up the planet now or will you leave the mess to the next generations?

I was invited to create a display about the project at The Tasmanian Ocean Summit held by The Australia Institute at the Spring Bay Mill. And this is what I came up with. Thanks to Jordan for organising a brilliant timber sign and more debris - and Triabunna artist Marilyn Benson for her creative painting work - I love it!

Not a happy update to share today... five weeks after cleaning and clearing this little beach near Hobart of every single piece of plastic (it took six days)... it's back to a terrible state. We found almost the same amount of plastic debris that was collected the first time around... It's a much deeper issue than just people dropping rubbish on the beach or out on their boats in the bay... it's the stormwater! Big rains bring dumps of rubbish and plastics from carparks and suburban streets and from our research so far here in lutruwita (Tasmania), there is nothing stopping it from reaching our oceans. Shocking discovery... and after numerous conversations with the council responsible for this beach, there is no current plan to rectify this issue. Project Interrupt does not just clean beaches, we advocate for change and this example is one of thousands and thousands around Australia. We are not blaming anyone for the problem, we are fixing the problem... one step at a time, one conversation at a time and one beach at a time!

Beach cleanup has begun... in solidarity with all the other organisations, groups and individuals doing their part to keep our beaches clear of plastics an rubbish, we intend to visit every single beach in lutruwita (Tasmania) to both clean and learn. Once we understand the underlying issues we can take these lessons up the line to council, to mayors, to politicians and then to Canberra. Check out the interactive map we've put together that details the progress so far: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1IoWbDIr0We2k0RPIjj3WKXksGb75j6E&usp=sharing
