About

Hi, I'm Kathryn. I am 39, happily married, with two beautiful daughters, 6 and 4, and I have been on the cancer conquering battlefield for the last 3 years, doing everything I can to cure my body of aggressive breast cancer.

It's been a journey of discovery, education, and emotional rollercoaster-dom since I was first diagnosed.

I walked out of my GP’s office after that fateful appointment back in 2019 with my ‘life overhaul wake up call’ in the form of a 2.5 cm tumour. 14 months later there 2 tumours, then 4 and now 6 more pesky tumours taking up residence in my left breast and lymph nodes. And they seem to be inviting their friends. I would like very much to hand them their eviction notices. This is where you come in- I could use some help evicting their asses.

My first of two surgeries was a week after the initial diagnosis. I had to abruptly cease my breast feeding relationship with my then 13 month old daughter Lily Grace- a trauma for both of us that still rates as high as the diagnosis itself. I planned to do all the usual treatment protocols available on the cancer buffet train including chemo, radiation, hormonal therapy etc.

But, thanks to some important conversations containing the right questions with my Oncologist at the time and my incredibly resourceful husband who began his researching journey in how to cure me we found out that, actually, chemo was only going to improve my chance of living past 15 years by a measly 9%. 9%!?!? What the actual? The extensive damage the very intensive chemo being offered to me was going to do to my body, the chances of developing other forms of cancer in its wake, and how it was going to impact my quality of life made saying ‘yes’ to the cancer buffet on offer a hard ‘No’ from me. This has never, and will never make sense to me. Nearly killing myself (which is literally what chemo is designed to do) to have a 9% chance of killing the cancer made no logical sense to me. To be clear - this is not the same statistics for everyone and chemo/radiation/standard of care offerings have a great place and can be very effective in cancer treatment for many types of cancer, it just wasn’t the case in mine.

Some research, several industrial sized boxes of tissues and some fast tracked appointments later and we opened Pandora’s box of alternative cancer treatment options. Ways of supporting my body to help it heal itself as I KNOW it is capable of doing.

Today, 3 years on, there is not much that I haven’t tried or implemented on my healing journey. On my most recent trip to my oncology team I was told that despite my heroic efforts I am now considered Stage 3c, kind of like the last tick of the clock towards Stage 4, which is not a level up I wish to make folks. I have close to exhausted what I can legally do here in Australia in terms of alternative therapy as their knowledgeable and capable hands are restricted by so much red tape that reigns in their offerings of hope for crusaders like me.

But it’s true when they say that cancer is a big money maker, and when you decide to colour outside the governments ‘standard of care’ medical plan lines it gets crazy expensive. So far the bill I’ve racked up well exceeds $250,000 (these are just the costs big enough to remember) and has cost us our deposit for the home we so desperately wish to buy. Not to mention the time it takes to actually research, plan for and implement the treatments which has kept me from working for that time too. The protocol I follow is literally like a full time job, and believe me- I work hard at it every day to keep myself out of what can be pretty debilitating pain at times and in the realm of healing.

My next proposed therapy if I choose to stay in Australia for treatment is a powerhouse combination of IV’s, hyperthermic and oxygen treatments, extended fasting and detox protocols and is going to cost approximately $7000 per week.

Yep.

$7000 per week.

Estimated treatment time is approximately 6-8 weeks. But can be ongoing depending on succes rate. Overseas treatments in cutting edge centres that support healing are an option too but are even higher investment amounts, the last quote came in at just shy of $80,000 for three weeks. But they also have technology and doses and more intensive programs not available anywhere in Australia that are known to be very effective for treating stubborn types of cancer such as the unpaying tenants (I wish they were paying- it would make affording all this stuff easier) currently in my left breast and chest. They also come with the price tag of being away from my family, my sweet little girls for the same period of time. It breaks my heart just to write that. But a girl’s gotta do, what a girl’s gotta do.

I completely understand that the amount I’m hoping to raise sounds like a massive amount, but my hope is that ‘many hands make light work’ and if you connect with my plight and feel like you can lighten any of that burden, no matter how small or large the amount, you know the appreciation and humility that will be felt of this end will be astronomical. Or perhaps you know someone who is just not sure to do with all the money they have? Maybe you could send my cause in their general direction lol. In all seriousness though, if you feel moved to share this, please, please do.

If you know me, you will know that asking for help is not something I’m terribly good at or comfortable doing, but I/we have reached a point where it can’t be done just on our own. So here we are. Accepting whatever help and generosity people offer is going to be yet another challenge for personal growth I will face on this journey, and I know I’m going to want to try to pay back every cent and more. I will instead offer this promise to you. I plan to live a very long and happy life, inspire others to do the same, share my unique light and gifts with the world and raise my girls to do the same. I will be forever grateful, hopeful, loving and I will pay it forward when I can. You have my word.

With kindness and gratitude,
Kathryn
