Raising funds for: Philbia Ogina
Philibia is a 23 year old Tanzanian woman who at eight years of age had rheumatic fever leading to rheumatic heart disease. Rheumatic fever is caused by streptococcal infections and is a disease of poverty. At eight Philbia got sick, breathless and doctors operated to have a mitral valve placed in her heart so she could live normally. Australians through someone living in Tanzania at the time paid for this surgery. She was due to have the valve replaced when she was fiften years old but her parents could not afford it. After the surgery as a child, she resumed school and lived normally. After school she spent a year at a sewing school and graduated from there and earns a little from that but recently has not been able to continue. She is now in urgent need of this replacement as she is very sick, breathless and prone to infection. She will die without surgery. She had malaria in September 2022 for which she was hospitaised and is constantly reinfected from which she struggles to fully recover. Without surgery Philbia will die. The operation will allow her to live reasonably normally, only with medication monthly to reduce the risk of infections.. Philbia is the third of five children. She grew up in the Butiama region about an hour from where her family now lives in Musoma. Her father has been a pastor in the Anglican Church for thirty two years, living in rural villages where pastors earn very little. Her father would be lucky to receive $60 (AU) weekly. He supplements the family income farming, growing maize and beans like most people in the area. Tanzania is in the bottom 15% of the world’s poorest countries (https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/poorest-countries-in-the-world) It has a basic health system which can treat diseases like malaria and normal infections. Most health services are run by the private sector on a user pays basis even in rural areas. Only church run clinics offer subsidised services. I recently had malaria and required overnight admission to hospital which cost about AU$90 which is unaffordable for most Tanzanians who are not middle class. An operation of this magnitude is unaffordable to Tanzanians in rural areas especially living on incomes such as that of her father. Hi Everyone This is a final note to all of you who supported Phibia to have her heart surgery last year. Recently her father invited me to have dinner at their home and I have included a photo of Phibia and her parents taken that evening. Followng dinner I was presented with a live chicken awhich in Africa is a gift often given to thank people. Apart from a follow up with the specialists this month, Philbia is fully recovered and not requiring any further medical intervention. So from her and the family thanks

She will have follow up at a hospital closer to home later in January. At the Anglican Cathedral in Musoma on Sunday Philbia publicaly thanked many people. She thanked you the people who made this possible. She thanked the doctors and nurses for saving her life and concluded with a message for you "May our God bless all the people and multiply their blessings hundred millions in their life. Hi Everyone I am now back in Australia. Philbia travelled down to Dar Es Salaam with her father and saw the doctors at the Cardiac Institute on Tuesday. Her dad told me that she has to have a tooth removed prior to surgery so she reduces risks of infection after surgery. They will be given an appointment for surgery next week. The donations received were in excess of the amount required for surgery. The extra funds are being given to provide accommodation and costs in Dar Es Salaam. I will write again once information about a date for surgery is confirmed.

Hi Friends and supporters unknown to me. Although the amount raised on the site shows a shortfall a generous donor is contributing the shortfall and proving sufficient for airfares for Philbia and her father to avoid a 22 hour bus journey. They have contacted the hospital to make arrangements for the operation to proceed and the mitral valve is being ordered from India and will be arriving next week. I am in the process of transferring funds to Tanzania to pay the hospital. I spoke to his father this afternoon and he has sent a message via video which can be viewed at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EC4WA_v3rOtVsbyRoIbGpqJcyBW9lJeN/view?usp=drivesdk and has an English translation. I'll update you on Philbia as news arrives from Dar Es Salaam Again thanks so much for your part in assisting this young woman
