DONATIONS TO HELP LAURIE ‘TRUCK’ SAMS
Update as of Tuesday 25th of October 2022
An update on Trucks condition and progress;
The long term prognosis will highly likely see the re growth of the tumour, this along with the cancer diagnosis means Truck faces challenges on a day to day basis.
In keeping with this he suffers confusion, memory loss, fatigue, ongoing pain and restrictions to day to day tasks.
For those of you that know Truck, you will understand how life changing and difficult these challenges are for him. He has had much of his independence taken from him and is slowly coming to terms with what his new reality looks like and how he navigates this.
Truck being the fighter he is with his selfless nature, and despite his prognoses, is making every attempt to try and get back on his bike so he can continue to ride for The Long Ride Home and raise awareness for PTSD. These goals are what keeps Truck motivated, as they always have. Although the possibility of future rides is unknown, Truck’s spirit and motives are strong and we know he’d love to give it another crack.
As most of you are aware, Truck is now back home in Thailand where he can rest in the comfort of his own home. As a family we face ongoing medical costs as well as those associated with day to day living to keep Truck comfortable, as well as the expenses for international travel as his family and friends don’t live in Thailand. The logistics of supporting and caring for him are difficult and as a family our priority is to ensure he is in good company, pain free, receiving the medical care he needs and is as comfortable as possible.
We thank you all for your support and donations so far, we are forever grateful for the community around us. Your support goes a long way and as a family we are very thankful, Truck has been overwhelmed by the generosity.
................................
Truck took a medical turn in July 2022 and as a result has been left to navigate some very traumatic medical issues. Truck has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, Glioblastoma, which is a malignant tumour affecting the brain or spine. Truck’s tumour was located on his left temporal lobe, this part of the brain is responsible for speech, memory, the ability to process emotions, language and balance. Truck suffers from these side affects with bouts of severe memory and speech loss at times.
In August he underwent surgery to remove the tumour which was successful.
Truck is currently based in Perth at the St John of God, Murdoch hospital where he is receiving exceptional specialist care.
He is currently undergoing post surgery rehabilitation, regaining strength and treatment for cancer, both Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. Truck is very lucky to be so well looked after by the staff at St John of God and is being well supported by family, veterans and friends.
The decision has been made to transfer Truck back to Thailand in October where he can recover and rest in the comfort of his own home and environment.
To date the DVA (Department of Veteran’s Affairs) have been exceptional in assisting on a financial level towards treatment and recovery. However, many of the costs involved are not covered by the DVA and so we are reaching out for financial donations to assist Truck in the journey he faces ahead and his fight against his cancer diagnosis.
