Raising funds for: West Papuan Students in Crisis
PLEASE NOTE THESE STUDENTS ARE NOT POLITICAL ACTIVISTS, RATHER INNOCENT STUDENTS TRYING TO ACHIEVE THEIR EDUCATION GOALS AND IMPROVE LIVES BACK HOME FOR THEIR PEOPLE. THEY POTENTIALLY RISK THEIR SAFETY JUST SPEAKING UP ABOUT THEIR SITUATION. (MOHON DIPERHATIKAN MAHASISWA INI BUKAN AKTIVIS POLITIK, MEREKA INI CUMAN MAHASISWA YANG TIDAK BERSALAH DAN POLOS DAN YANG SEDANG BERUSAHA MENCAPAI TUJUAN PENDIDIKAN DI AUSTRALIA DAN UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEHIDUPAN DI PAPUA. MEREKA MENGAMBIL RESIKO UNTUK KESELAMATAN MEREKA CUMAN KARENA BERBICARA TENTANG SITUASI MEREKA LEWAT BERITA). "My hopes for my future and my education have been taken away" says Efika Kora who is her final year of a long emotional journey (travelling from Timika in remote West Papua to Adelaide, Australia) to become a fully qualified commercial pilot, when she found out her government scholarship was abruptly cancelled, through no fault of her own.  Efika is one of a group of 5 West Papuan students in South Australia and a larger group of students around the world in this devastating situation.  The Australia West Papua Association – SA (www.awpaadelaide.com) is an incorporated non-government organisation that gives support and advocacy for West Papuan people, both in West Papua and Australia. We heard of the predicament of these Papuan students studying in Adelaide, and discussed with them how we and other concerned people might be of help. There is a big problem in a remote province in Indonesia called West Papua (also known as Papua Barat and formerly Irian Jaya Barat -West Irian) and the local indigenous population are very disadvantaged. There is widescale political unrest and poverty in this region and to try help the situation a group of indigenous students have been granted scholarships to study internationally. Earlier this year, over 160 of these special scholarships were cancelled for unclear political reasons and through no fault of the individual students. Now the young students are now being forced to abandon their dreams of tertiary education and return home to West Papua. Many of these come from poor backgrounds and without the scholarships they cannot continue. A small group of these West Papuan students reached out to the Australian West Papua Association- SA for help with their situation are pictured below. What can we do? With your help, we are going to help a group of 5 West Papuan students realise their dreams and safety finish their university studies here in Australia after their scholarships were stopped. This acheivement is inspirational to the people of West Papua, sends a message that the rest of the world cares about the region of West Papua and allows the students the chance to safely finish and return with full qualifications to be community leaders in their chosen profession. We are aiming to raise $30,000 - which is $6,000 for each student to help cover living expenses for the next year so they can safely concentrate on finishing their studies. We aim to provide $100-150 per week for food and transport per student. Generous locals (connected to AWPA-SA) have amazingly gifted the West Papuans students safe suitable accommodation and the students are committed to working part time jobs *as you can see from pictures of them currently fruit picking to try and earn their own money, but the cost of living in Australia is very high and we also want them to be able to focus on their studies after their recent stress about the loss of their scholarships. As we raise this money, AWPA-SA will keep sharing more stories about the 5 individual students your donations are assisting. If we get more than our $30K target (YES, please - that would be great!!) we can reach out with offers of support to other West Papuan students in the same tragic situation across Australia and other parts of the world The first individual student story we share is - West Papuan future pilot Efika Kora- please check out her video and donate as much as you can to help her stay as she is only 2 semesters away from achieving her educational and professional dream.  4 more student videos will be shared on rotation over the duration of our campaign.

Thanks everyone for your donations to help the students - we are just over half way to our target and we still NEED your support! Your donation can inspire others. Please share our mycause link and your thoughts on why this cause is important to the individual students and the people of West Papua. Please share with your friends, family and professional networks - both on and off social media as this is last week of crowdfunding (ends 31st May)!! Finally, we just had to share this sweet back story from one of our donors Rosemary from Adelaide who sent us this message explaining why she wanted to donate to our cause: "Good Afternoon, I just read the ABC interview with Efika Kora. Ever since I was a very young child I wanted to be a fighter pilot. I studied hard at school on the subjects I would need, when I was 17 I went to an Australian Airforce Career Day to ask about enlisting to train. Back then because I was a woman , I was laughed at, so of course my dreams of being a pilot never happened. I never want to see that happening to anyone else". We hope our cause continues to get lots of support in it's final week so she can soar high above the sky as a pilot and the other West Papuan students we are supporting can also reach their educational dreams too.

With your help AWPA SA has been helping West Papuan students in SA who have had their education scholarships revoked by the Indonesian government. We have been raising funds to help them remain in Australia and finish their courses. We have raised just over $14,000 online and with some additional offline donations our total is just over $20,000 so far. We very much appreciate the kind donations to The AWPA West Papuan Student Fund. We’ve been surprised by the generosity of people and would love to keep up the donations for the rest of the campaign so please keep sharing our crowd funding page https://www.mycause.com.au/p/281802/west-papuan-students-in-crisis so we can reach our target of $30,000 We have safely housed all the students with generous local supporters and have some wonderful in-kind support in the form of food vouchers from partnering organisations. The students, however, are not out of the woods yet! Uni SA is going to get back to us in the coming week about the question of the students being allowed to finish their courses. Uni SA is sympathetic to the position the students have been put in but want the students to be funded sufficiently that they can concentrate on their studies and not on daily living costs. This forthcoming decision will be critical to the options available to the students!! We had an expansive ABC radio interview with journalist Marian Faa delivered a few weeks ago, as well as this being made into a story for the online news as well (here is a link https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-20/west-papuan-students-dreams-dashed-after-scholarships-cancelled/100997776?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web ) In NZ, after lobbying from The NZ Greens , the Government has made a decision to provide scholarships to the West Papuan students to remain and finish their courses. In West Papua, the Regional Papuan Government has demanded that the Indonesian Government continue to fund the students who are near completion of their courses. They say the students money comes from the Government revenue from West Papua resources (such as mining and forestry) and this money should assist the West Papuan students. The recent news report from Antaranews (Indonesia) about international student funding continuing affects only one of the six students in SA. That student has advised AWPA that the money to continue his studies has been put into his account this week. He had not been supported financially since Sept 2021. The rest of the students had already received letters recalling them to West Papua and as such were not covered by this announcement although they were progressing well with their studies and were near to completion. These students are devasted as desperate to stay and complete their studies so every donation is very important. Please visit our website www.awpaadelaide.com and sign up to our email newletter for ongoing updates after this crowdfunding campaign finishes.
