Sage has been Caleb's canine companion since she was a puppy. She's currently in Intensive Care due to a paralysis tick reaction, and while her chances of recovery are improving now, the vet bills are already enormous.
She's being weaned off the ventilator and woken up slowly today. She has 24 hour care from 2 vets, and has undergone multiple procedures and treatments. She's been described as a strong candidate for recovery with no expected long term effects if she can manage to breathe on her own again.
Caleb is Sage's person. They met as teenager and puppy at a time when Caleb felt overwhelmed with what life ahead looked like, and they formed a strong bond. Sage gave Caleb purpose, and showed him unconditional love and a new perspective. She took him for walks, insisted they chase ducks at the park and share treats, splashed in the river, howled along to their favourite songs, and argued back and forth like only a young adult and a Malamute/German Shepherd can!
Inspired by Sage's zest for life, Caleb found his dream - to become the pilot he'd dreamed about being since he was 4 years old! He was successful in applying to study and train with the Qantas Group Pilot Academy, but in order to save up enough money for living costs for himself and Sage while he studied, he took a FIFO job for 12 months and saved every cent he earned.
Those savings have been spent paying for Sage's medical care over the last week, with the bill well over $10K and climbing each day. Sage's foster family, who care for her when Caleb is away at work, have been a wonderful support and helped financially and we appreciate this so much.
Caleb cannot fathom not giving Sage the same chance at life that she gave him, but it is costing him everything he's worked for since she inspired him.
