“Education is one of the most powerful weapons in which we can use to change the world” (Mandela, 2003), but how can this be so, when many young people in our own country are not given the same opportunities to learn.
Although not always apparent, some aspects of Australian Education is exclusive and culturally irresponsible towards Indigenous students. This can account for the existing educational gap and high-drop out rates of Indigenous students as outlined in the 2017 Closing the Gap Report (in which needs further updating). As a future educator, this is alarming.
Hence why this upcoming month, I will be running 5k a day to raise funds for Jarjum College in Redfern. Jarjum is a primary school located in Redfern whom provides education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are not participating or coping in mainstream schools as a result of their domestic circumstances (finally - a school that recognises how ones circumstances can hinder their ability to learn, participate and behave in class rather than blaming the child, their race or their culture).
Jarjum and the wonderful teachers aim to alleviate the social, emotional, behavioural and health disadvantages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children so that they can return to mainstream schooling or further, secondary education.
Jarjum is one of the few schools in NSW that provides an intensive, holistic and culturally attuned and locally responsive education. This, my friends, is so important for the well-being of Indigenous students and peoples. I think we as Australians should all be learning about and from country. And these youngsters may we and truly be the future teachers who can do just that!
As covid is making it difficult for students to attend school, all donations will go towards classroom resources (textbooks, pens, papers), food - as students are educated about healthy eating and are given breakfast/morning tea and lunch when attending, possible excursions when lockdown is over (swimming lessons etc), new sports equipment and even things for arts and craft lessons.
Any donation is appreciated - and I know that all of these students, the staff and community would be extremely thankful.
woohoo!! nice work E!! x
