I have always loved outdoor adventures such as skiing, tennis, horse riding and bushwalking.
Now I’ve decided to do a 6 day walk on the eastern section of the Larapinta trail, walking over 100km in the West MacDonnell ranges outside Alice Springs. This will be a first. I have no experience with this distance, a multi-day hike or desert and rocky walking conditions.
As part of this adventure I am raising money for research and care of people with melanoma in honour of my Dad, Geoff. He was treated at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre in Sydney during the three years he lived with a stage 4 diagnosis.
Skin cancer is one of Australia’s highest causes of death. It also has limited treatment options once the cancer has spread.
My walk will start on the 28 June and end on the 4 July. Wish me luck as training is underway.
Kinghorn Cancer Centre (Garvan Research Foundation)
Placed as a major centre in Australia focused on the translation of research breakthroughs into novel diagnostic, prognostic, treatment and prevention options for a number of key National Health Priority cancers including: breast, prostate, GI (pancreas and colorectal) and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
The Kinghorn Cancer Centre is not necessarily aimed at high throughput treatments but rather builds on its unique strengths to deliver targeted, cost effective, personalised therapies suitable for integration into larger nationwide cancer treatment services.
