Therapy Dog for Abigail
At the young age of 9 months Abigail was diagnosed with a very rare chromosome deletion known as AUTS2, after months of difficulties feeding, delayed fine and gross motor development and vision challenges. Abigail has a twin sister Sage and an older brother Finn. Filled with uncertainty after such a rare diagnosis I have set out to connect Abigail with amazing early intervention therapists and surround her with a supportive community. Being a one-in-ninety-five million kinda rarity is something Abigail takes in her stride, despite developmental delays and challenges regulating her emotions many times a day, she is undoubtedly one of the funniest and most affectionate children you could ever hope to meet. She is determined and strong-willed, and in her short life thus far has captivated the hearts of those who know her. Turning 4 in March, Abigail has a remarkable love of music and a formidable bond with dogs. When around dogs she becomes more alert, engaged, assertive and in control of herself - anyone that has witnessed this knows this to be true. Abby doesn’t naturally engage a lot with children her own age, but will easily and most happily play with a dog. Whilst we are so very fortunate to have the NDIS support Abigail’s Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Music Therapy, vision therapy, occupational therapy and many other supports, it is outside their scope to fund a therapy dog. The work and dedication involved in getting our own dog and training it is not something that is practical and realistic for our family and so we have been searching and researching for a year to work the best way to find the right dog for Abigail. The positive impact of a Therapy Dog in Abigail’s daily life will be simply astounding. We have been accepted to go on the waitlist and partner with Dogs for Kids to secure a fully trained and certified Therapy Dog for Abigail, with their amazing charity outlaying approximately $25k to buy, raise and train these incredible animals. In partnering with them we are designated a worthy fundraising target of $10K for our contribution to Abigail’s therapy dog and simultaneously raise awareness of this wonderful organisation. We will be making some fundraising events throughout the year and want to encourage everyone to spread the word to friends and family far and wide for this life changing organisation. Thank you all for the amazing support, we are so grateful and look forward to staying in contact and keeping you updated of our progress.

As the winter chill starts to arrive in Melbourne we are keeping very active every day. Abigail has new glasses with a stronger prescription, after three appointments with her eye clinic at Berwick Family Eyecare, and it was SO easy to choose the frames this time as they had DOG ? prints along the arm! It’s as if they were manufactured just for Abigail! Our therapy appointments have ramped up again, after taking it slower for term 1 to allow Abigail to settle into kinder (a big transition that she has taken in her stride!) and now we are getting assessments and evaluations done in readiness for school commencing next year. Weekly we take Abigail to music therapy, vision therapy and then fortnightly we have animal Assisted therapy, as well as monthly physiotherapy. Then there’s additional medical appointments such as Neuropsychologist, Opthamologist and Paediatrician. Throughout it all, Abigail engages and you can see her determination. We are so incredibly grateful for your generosity and support, thank you to all who have donated, shared this page and volunteered in other ways. We really do have a village around us, and our lives are forever enriched because of it.

Recently Abigail has started Animal Assisted Therapy with Lead the Way, and this is her pictured with Freda. They will spend time together every fortnight to help Abigail learn some tools for emotional regulation and self expression. As a family we are gaining more insight into the therapeutic benefits of having a therapy Dog and we just can’t wait for the day when we get to be matched with our forever dog Fromm Dogs for Kids

This past week we have had the privilege of dog-sitting for family. Little Bascher has been such a wonderful playmate for Abigail, helping her to settle to sleep, watching her to encourage eating. As a baby Abigail was really challenging to feed, taking a really long time with bottles and even up until age 2 was on a large amount of soft foods as she lacked muscle control in her mouth to process hard textured foods. There were multiple choking episodes, which were very scary. On the occasions Abigail was admitted to hospital for febrile convulsions she would refuse to drink any liquids, resulting in having nasal-gastric tubes put in place to keep her hydrated. Thankfully much of this she has grown out of, however it is a constant battle to get Abigail to sit still and consume a full meal. There’s lots of getting distracted and most instances we have to spoon feed her to ensure she has adequate calories for her busy little body to thrive. This is really common amongst children with AUTS2 globally, with many children being tune fed their nutrition either partially or fully. Having a dog around Abigail, helps her to focus and engage with her food, she has a greater appetite and loves having a dog watch what she is eating and even sharing her food. It makes SUCH a positive difference to us, because when mealtimes are hard multiple times a day it can really become stressful. Thank you Bascher for coming to stay with us and giving us so much affection!

Wow! In just one week we have had amazing support from near and far, 23 donations, such generous people in our circles and I am blown away! There have been times this past week where I have thought most sincerely how much of a life changer a dog will be for Abigail. Like when I was looking dinner last Wednesday and in her busy exploring she played with the oven, changed the setting to grill which increased the temperature and not only filled the oven with smoke but successfully set off all the smoke detectors which gave her a horrific fright. (Abigail is quite sensitive to sudden & unexpected noises and can begin to shake). Not only would a therapy dog help keep her occupied so the temptation to explore so wildly would be reduced, but in the instance of a sensory overload or fright a therapy dog would be able to lie with Abby, apply pressure similar to a weighted blanket and help comfort and regulate her again.
