This February marks 3 long, painful years since my mum passed away unexpectedly. This year I wanted to do something a little different to commemorate my beautiful mum and the amazing person she was, and support the Diabetes Australia Foundation. Most people that know me know I’m super lazy and I especially hate running, but for my mum I’m going to run 2 laps around The Tan (7.6km), by the end of Feb! Doesn’t sound like much but I am insanely unfit!
Many people know diabetes as something you get from being overweight/eating unhealthy, or being born with it, but my mum unfortunately was different. She came back from a trip to Darwin one year with a blister on her heel which eventually became infected, which then caused her to obtain Type I Diabetes, which is irreversible. A lot of people aren’t aware you can get Diabetes from infections, chicken pox, etc and I think as it becomes more common, there should be more education around it and hopefully one day a treatment. Who knows, maybe if I were more educated around it my mum would still be with me.
3 years ago I was the one that found my mum lifeless. Just overnight her life was taken by complications from this awful condition, and I would do anything to prevent someone else having to go through what did. Every dollar helps and hopefully one day we can wipe this condition out!
Funds donated to the My Cause Gift Fund will be disbursed to Diabetes Australia. The trustees will always disburse funds to the nominated cause, however in the case that that is not possible, the funds will be disbursed to a DGR charity at the trustees discretion.
