Please support this cause

Money raised is for Soldier On (Defence Force veterans), Perth Bushfire Appeal (LMDRF), Children In Need India & Save the Children Throughout life, like most of us, I've been touched by the struggles of many family, friends, colleagues, neighbours etc. Struggles that span difficult subjects. Struggles that can be life sapping. Struggles often hidden from public view. Yet struggles that have also at times been eased by amazing, selfless support from charitable organisations far and wide. So starting 9th March 2021, I will be hiking / bush camping solo 1,005km over 7 weeks to raise funds to support 4 causes that have / continue to dominate many people. Please, I ask you all for your help. No matter how small, in donating whatever you can to help raise money for those who are less fortunate, yet selfishly supported by 4 amazing charities above. Please help. 1) Across my 35-year career I've been fortunate to work with and support numerous Defence Forces, especially Navy, Army and Air Forces. Defenders of Nations (women and men) who sacrifice much to protect the people and values of those Nations. This sacrifice at times has unintended consequences. In recent years, Mental Health and Well Being (Anxiety, Depression, Suicide etc.), Domestic Violence incidents and difficulties in transitioning / adapting to Civilian life have increased. Soldier On Founded 2012 – Supports >5,000 Defence Force veterans and their family members through Health and Wellbeing services, Employment Support, Learning and Education Programs, as well as Participation and Social Connection activities. Support that helps veterans and their families build resilience and create meaningful connections with family, community, and employers. https://soldieron.org.au/ 2) In recent years, the world knows the significantly increased Bushfires across Australia have had a dramatic impact across many facets of life for residents in Bushfire prone areas. February’s bushfire in Perth Western Australia (Wooroloo and Hills) fanned by some 70kph winds, was fought day and night by >500 career / volunteer firefighters and many aircraft over 6 days, burnt through 27,000 acres, had a fire perimeter of 140kms, destroyed 86 homes and vast domestic utility infrastructures whilst displacing many hundreds of people and animals. Amazingly only a handful of injuries and no deaths were recorded. The physical impact people face to rebuild their homes is massive. However, the mental impact people face to rebuild their lives, communities and their long-term wellbeing is immeasurable. The rebuilding and support needed will be measured in years. Affected residents and those that fought the fires need our help. Perth Lord Mayor's Distress Relief Fund (LMDRF) Wooroloo and Hills Bushfire Appeal - The LMDRF is Western Australia’s official State emergency fund. It directly provides donation financial assistance to individuals for the alleviation and relief of distress, suffering and personal hardships, brought about by the Wooroloo and Hills bushfires. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Wooroloo_bushfire#:~:text=It%20was%20confirmed%20that%2010%2C400,136%20km%20(85%20mi) 3) Across my long career, again I’ve been fortunate to work with many nationalities. Whilst all have great qualities, I have never been more humbled by those friends, colleagues, acquaintances from the Indian sub-continent, and the everyday plight that many people, especially Mothers and Children face just to survive desperate conditions in their homeland. Children In Need India Founded 1974 – Helps poor mothers and children in India break free from the inter-generational cycle of poverty, malnutrition, and ill health. Providing nurturing support at key stages in people’s lives: childhood, adolescence, and pregnancy. Helping mothers lay the foundations for a happy and healthy future for their children. Support is given to those most in need: regardless of their religion, caste, or ethnicity. https://www.ciniaustralia.org/ 4) Children, being the future of the planet yet the most vulnerable of all, often fall below the poverty line. Even in Australia. So, to provide support to the future leaders and custodians of our planet, I have been a regular donor to Save The Children from an early age. Save The Children Founded 1919 – Simply put, supporting to build a better world for and with children. Working hard to protect children from harm and help them access quality education and health services. It is often the difference between life and death for a vulnerable child. Helping a child suffering from deadly hunger, a child caught in a brutal conflict, and a child living in fear of abuse. In Australia and in some of the toughest places in the world, your support will help children grow heathy and strong, ensuring they have a place in the classroom and protection from harm. https://www.savethechildren.org.au/

Update (short) 21st April - Day 44 Longer update in a day or two.... After 42 days hiking (+2 rest days), today at 13.17 AWST, I crossed the Kalamunda Northern Terminus finish line. Like some before me, completing 1,005 km’s whilst climbing up ~21,300 mtrs and down ~21,000 mtrs, i.e. ~4 times the height of Mount Kilimanjaro or close to 3 times the height of Mount Everest. All for some amazing charities. I’ve been blessed with good health all the way. I’ve seen beautiful wildlife / sights, met so many wonderful people and had great experiences that will live with me forever. I’ve also been absolutely humbled by the generosity of people who’ve so far donated >$11,000 to the 4 charities. I cannot thank people enough. Raising awareness and money for the charity causes was of great importance for me. I’ve also been blessed with incredible support from a girl I adored from when I was 16. Without my wife Andrea, none of this would have possible really. Plus support and motivational messages from so many people willing me on. Thank you. Lastly, we are only on this earth a very short time. For some, far too short a time. Accordingly, I dedicate this 1,005 km’s journey to Mrs Rose. Sue Rose. The wife of one of my longest friends (school), Derek (Dex) Rose. Sadly, Sue passed away a few days before my journey’s start. Far too early in life and very sad. Dex mate, you have been in my thoughts every step of the way. GB Reflection.... Some say it’s about the journey not the destination. They are spot in. Hiking 1,005 km’s of Nyoongar Country wilderness through which the Bibbulmun Track meanders, is an experience that just kept on giving. Every step, every minute of every day, whether it be the oceans, majestic forests, flowers, wildlife, people or simply just the time to oneself reflecting, the Bibbulmun Track and land upon which it lays, just keeps on giving and giving. As such, I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of the land upon which the Bibbulmun meanders, the people of Nyoongar Country, Western Australia. I pay my respect to the local elders and leaders both past, present and future. Thank you. Charities I Hiked 1,005 km’s For: - Perth Bushfire Appeal, Soldier On (Defence Force veterans), Children In Need India and Save the Children. Update (short) 18th April - Day 41 With yesterday (17th April) being another ~30 km’s day, passing over Mount Vincent >450 mtrs and Mount Cuthbert @ >500 mtrs to Canning camp area, earlier today, I passed the sign showing I had only 68 km’s to cross the finish line. Now sat at Mount Dale camp area, that number is down to 63 km’s!! So far, I’ve completed 942 of 1,005 km’s whilst ascended ~20,650 mtrs and descended ~20,400 mtrs. On target to cross the finish line in Kalamunda on Wednesday 21st April between 13.00 & 14.00 AWST. GB Reflection.... Good things do not always come to an end, they remain in our hearts and memories forever...... Tomorrow 19th April - being a shorter ~20km’s hiking day, over Mount Dale @ ~550 mtrs to Waalegh camp area, I will reach the point of only 43 km’s to the finish line !! One again, Immense thank you for your donation. But please can I ask that you reach out to your friends, colleagues etc. and encourage them to also donate via the My Cause link below. Time is running out. Even the smallest donation by only another few can make such a difference. Please help to garner further donations as the end is now close, and so many people depend on our support to get to a new life of normality in future. Charities I’m Hiking For: - Perth Bushfire Appeal (Lord Mayor Distress Relief WA), Soldier On (Defence Force veterans), Children In Need India and Save the Children. Update (short) 16th April - Day 43 of 49 The original plan was 49 days to cross the finish line. Today would have been my 43rd day. However, I’m now a little ahead of the original plan mostly due to less rest days and hiking longer days. So 16th April is now day 39 (5 weeks & 4 days) of the adjusted plan. So far, I’ve completed 893 of 1,005 km’s whilst ascended 19,700 mtrs / descended 19,300 mtrs. Crazy yeh. So, crossing the finish line will now be on day 45 (which incl. 2 full rest days) i.e. now Wednesday 21st April between 13.00 & 14.00 AWST. GB Reflection.... The best view / feeling / egg custard tart is always after the hardest climb... Yesterday (15th April) proved to be a challenge. As when I arrived at planned camp site the whole area was on fire. A 4,000 hectare preventative bushfire burn off by firefighters. Some adjustment was needed to find camp for the night away from potential fire spread, smoke etc. Firefighters were excellent, and helped get me sorted. In their official terms, I was a “displaced hiker”!! Today (16th April) was a big day. Lots of km’s including ascending / descending Mount Cooke. The highest point of the 1,005 km’s journey. At 582 mtrs, Mount Cooke was a challenging climb, but ended great at the top. I lay down in full sun / clear blue sky and ate two egg custard tarts (from food drop by my wife at Albany Highway very early that morning). Bloody wonderfull !!. And drank a litre of water infused with electrolytes. Not so bloody wonderful, but needed. GPS picture capture me at the point I was laying down atop Mount Cooke. ? Tomorrow (17th April) I will pass the point of only 100 km’s to the finish line !! Once again, immense thank you for your donation. But please can I ask that you reach out to your friends, colleagues etc. and encourage them to also donate via the My Cause link. Time is running out. Even a small donation by a few can make such a difference.

Update (short) 15th April - Day 40 of 49 Nice cup of lemon and ginger tea atop Mount Wells at 09.30 this morning. Set off from Chadoora at 06.00 (pitch dark) to get up Mount Wells early. Now setting off to White Horse Hills camp for tonight. A big 31.6 km’s day today. But at least the sun is shining bright. And we are now at ~$9,300. Thank you.

Update (short) 14th Apr - Day 39 of 49 Despite two days of torrential rain / wind from recent Cyclones, at times making the ground like rivers, nothing could dampen my spirit nor resolve to continue unabated. With ~44 km’s to complete over those two days, the wild / wet / cold weather simply made me more determined to finish what I set out to accomplish some 5 weeks hence. To raise awareness and support for those less fortunate than most. So today, now three days ahead of schedule, I pass thru Dwellingup WA, to arrive later today at Chadoora Camp. Some 815 of 1,005 km’s completed with ~16,900 mtrs ascended and 16,600 mtrs descended. Yep, there are no flat bits. Mount Wells at 552 mtrs awaits me on Thursday! GB Reflection..... From difficulty comes reality, From reality comes despair, From despair comes a need of help, From a need of help comes support, From support comes hope, From hope comes action, From action comes a new reality, From a new reality comes a possible future of normality, health and well being for those less fortunate. You see, by hiking 1,005 kms over 7 weeks to generate support (awareness & donations) for those in our communities who are in a state of difficulty / despair, together we generate hope for those people / families to achieve a new sense of future normality, health and well being. At times, we all need help from others in our lives. And together, through the support (donations), we create hope for a future that is brighter than today for many. Thank you for your donation. But please can I ask that you reach out to your friends, colleagues etc. and encourage them to also donate via the My Cause link. Time is running out. Even a small donation by a few can make such a difference. Please help to garner further donations as the end is now close, and so many people depend on our support to get to a new life of normality in future. Thank you to you all.

Update 9th April 2021 - Day 33 of 49 Solo 1,005 km’s hike / bush camp over 7 weeks for 4 amazing charities. Thank you once again for those that have donated already. Cannot thank you enough. For those that haven’t, come on friends, please donate so we can all make a real difference to those less fortunate than many of us. Come on let’s do it!! Two days ahead of schedule, I made it to day 33 of 49 thus arrived at Collie, having hiked 664 of 1,005 km’s so far. 66% complete !! Nothing will stop me crossing the finish line on ANZAC Day morning. GB Reflection..... “There once lived a creature called a Mosquito, The Mozzie, that would flutter and buzz about like a 747 wherever you go, Having me as a camping site companion is always great, As no matter how I try not to be, I always end up that Mozzie’s bait, When the little pest flutters and buzz’s about, You can rest assured, without any shadow of doubt, That even if only a millimetre of my flesh is laid bare, Tis always me that the damn Mozzie considers tasty fare, That is until I feel that Mozzie bite, Then, I summon all my strength and squash the little shite” Some Fun Facts - Aim - Solo hike / bush camp 1,005 km’s in 49 days for Aussie Charities - Dates - 9 March to 25 April (49 days) - Alive - Yes, stronger as home gets closer - Days Completed - 33 of 49 - Bibbulmun Stage Completed - 36 of 59 - Location - Collie, Western Australia - Distance Completed - 664 of 1,005 km’s - Steps Complete - ~1,328,000 - Altitude Ascended - ~14,640 mtrs - Altitude Descended - ~14,435 mtrs - Real Snakes - 21 (7 Dugite & 14 Tiger) - Hoop Snakes - 0 - Bandicoots - 12 (campsite scavenger) - Wild Boar / Pig - 3 (1st shit my pants!, 2nd was more relaxed, 3rd even took photo before running. If I see a 4th, maybe we can get a selfie !!) - Drop Bears - 1 ?? (I’m sure of it. So I grabbed my Drop Bear survival kit (kind neighbour made me). Covered my head and shoulders with vegemite (so Bear would slide off if dropped on), put my water bottle in an Australia flag stubby holder, applied my Lynx Australia body spray and waited. Think it thought twice about dropping and buggered off. But I was ready. - Kangaroos - far too many to count - Dolphins - 6 (all together) - Emu’s - 9 (3 adults & 6 young) - Spider Web in Face - Gazillions - March Flies - OMG the pesky bastards will eat you alive! - Blisters - 1 (small) Lowlight - Day 18 to 33 - 1) Getting news from KSA that two of my good friends (Inayath & Jose) wife (aged 38) and mother (aged 81) respectively, both in India, had died suddenly. Both Inayath & Jose worked with me in UAE & KSA over last 5 years or so. Very sad indeed. 2) Plus have you seen those altitude stats above. 14,640 mtrs! OMG...so many valleys, ravines, hills etc. Highlight - Day 18 to 33 - Great people along the way. 1) Surprised meeting / invited to dinner with family called Backhouse in Northcliffe!!. The first people with the same Backhouse surname I’d ever met. 2) Meeting and spending 6 nights with the aptly named Gourmet Kings!. See below for detail. Looking Back - Day 18 to 33 - With another 15 Bibbulmun stages to complete, the last 16 days or so were all deep in the vast forest of the South. Stunning, beautiful, majestic landscapes of Nyoongar Country. But just so many bloody trees!. Again, I met some great people along the way, but all heading in the opposite direction. Joe (Perth) plus met two great ladies at the Northcliffe Visitor Centre (Wendy & Shashi). So helpful and kind. Then I met Pen, a wonderfully likeable lady who just opened her own restaurant. The Naughty Noodle Bar in Northcliffe. MUST eat there! The food was outstanding and the prices even better. Another lady Lynn, asked to joined me whilst eating at Pen’s. Lynn from Victoria, was in Covid lock down for many months. So after lockdown she resigned, bought a camper trailer, rented her house and left Victoria for the safe haven / freedom of WA. She’s having a blast learning new things / meeting new people. Nice lady good conversation. Also heading North I bumped into 3 chaps doing 7 days from Donnelly River to Collie. Turns out I end up spending the next 6 nights with them. Dad, son and son in law. David, Christoper (aka Chef Ramsay) and Adrian. Together being, The Gourmet Kings. OMG they carried so much food and ate so well with even another food drop off in Balingup by the Mum (very nice lady also). They even had beer and wine. Really, really nice people and thoroughly enjoyed numerous evening chats / laughs. Great people that could eat!. Lastly, in Northcliffe, simply by chance in the Visitor Centre, I was introduced to another Backhouse human being. Naomi. She invited me to dinner with husband (Warrick), 5 kids and grandad Tom Backhouse who farms Avocado and other fruits on ~100 acres in Pemberton close by. What an absolutely wonderful evening. Learning how the Backhouse’s came to WA. How they pioneered thru the hard times to establish a thriving business and extended Backhouse family. Wonderful. And by chance, 3 days later, having hiked from Northcliffe to Pemberton, who should I bump into in the street but Tom Backhouse again !!! We chatted for a while and parted ways, both happier for the experience. My new extended family of Backhouse’s. Looking Forward - Day 34 to 49 - Two days ahead of schedule, tomorrow Friday 9th April, I head out to complete the final 23 Bibbulmun stages by day 49. Some 341 km’s ahead of me. First heading north towards Dwellingup, then into the hills / forests surrounding Perth before moving thru Mundaring and finally onto Kalamunda to cross the finish line on the special occasion of ANZAC Day (25th April). 1,005 km’s from my start point. Fingers crossed. Charity Donations Day 1 to 33 - With an increased target of AUD $15,000, we have so far raised ~$8,000 through donations from Australia, England, Scotland, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and USA. Immense thank you again to all those friends, colleagues, family etc. that have donated so far. All donators are indeed superstars. I’m truly humbled and honoured by the generosity. UPDATE 25th March - Day 17 of 49 GB Reflection..... “With the crashing of the mighty Southern Ocean waves against the untouched white sands, I am here. With the creaking of the giant Tingle Tree forests for as far as the eye can see, I am there. With the darkest midnight sky illuminated by the elegant Southern Cross shining aloft, I am now. OMG. Lowlight Day - 11 to 17 - Damn March flies. 3 days of 31c plus temps. Looking Back - Day 11 to 17 - With 8 Bibbulmun stages to complete, the last 7 days meant leaving the Southern shores of Australia to turn due North. Essentially North to the finish line in some 39 days. With the sun ahead and wind behind, I was hoping for a little wind assistance to smash thru the next 140 km’s to day 17!. Again, I met some great people along the way, but all heading in the opposite direction. Scott (Queensland), the Giggle Sisters (Nina & Michelle) and Neil (all from WA). Also met and camped 1 night with the legendary Pack Animal (real name David). He essentially lives on the Bibbulmun Track all year round moving between stages / towns each year. Great conversation and company. Wealth of Bush living knowledge. Heading in from the cost to the vast wet / grass lands of the South with their array of amazing wildflowers, then into the majestic forests again towards Mount Chance, Lake Maringup thru to Northcliffe. The 1st rest day. Day 18. Woohoo ? Looking Forward - Day 19 to 26 - Saturday I head out to complete 8 further stages over the next 8 days. Some 170 km’s.
