For the sick and vulnerable, a hospital stay can be impact the mood and mind greatly. A 2017 report published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine found a 33% median rate of depression among hospitalized patients, compared with about 7% in the general population.
My cause is small and simple one- I want to have flowers sent to someone hospitalised and in a very small way show them that someone is thinking and cares for them. It is a very small act of kindness but I think has potential to lift the recipients spirit and mental health. Studies conducted by Park and Mattson in 2008 found that patients in hospital rooms decorated with flowers and potted plants needed less postoperative pain medication, had lower systolic blood pressure and pulse rates, were less anxious and tired, and generally were in a more positive psychological state than patients in rooms without flowers.
In another study all the participants in ‘The Emotional Impact of Flowers Study’ showed ‘genuine’ or ‘excited’ smiles when receiving flowers, which demonstrated exceptional pleasure and gratitude. This response was universal and occurred in all age groups.
Based on the above studies and many more which I have researched, I think such a simple bouquet of flowers will have a potentially large impact. Help me make a change in someone's life when they most need it.
