I have been selected to be part of the 6th cohort of 100 Homeward Bound participants to take part in a global leadership program. Homeward Bound is a ground-breaking leadership initiative for women with a STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine) background across the globe. Homeward Bound emerged in recognition of the lack of women in leadership. It aims to increase the leadership capability of women and enhance their influence toward the sustainability of the planet and the greater good of all people. I am a scientist that has worked for over ten years in Australia’s national science agency helping local and farming communities to manage their environment effectively. However, I do not think we are doing enough. I do not see myself as just a consultant, fixing a problem and moving on without a backwards glance. Leadership comes in many forms. I want to empower people from the grassroots to make sustainable choices. I want to use my scientific knowledge to educate, partnered with local knowledge holders: • so we inspire people to choose better options to conserve our fragile planet and its many issues, both local and global; • so the communities take ownership in finding the best solutions that are both economically viable and environmentally sustainable. This year-long leadership program culminates in a 3-week ship journey to the complex and fragile ecosystems of Antarctica. Being so remote, in such an extreme and stunning environment instils a legacy mindset, empowering the women participants to dream bigger and return home with a sense of urgency and a hope for the future. While it is an absolute privilege to be chosen to be part of this initiative, it does not come cheap. I am seeking funds to take part in this program, including the journey to Antarctica.
