Raising funds for: Fleur Bakker
Our youngest daughter Fleur is diagnosed with STAGE IV TERMINAL BRAIN CANCER, and she underwent a live saving brain surgeries, barely survived the ordeal, and came out of an induced coma with severe brain damage and complete paralysis of the right side of her body. Specialised treatment with targeted drugs, and intensive therapies brought Fleur back to us, and she recovered 60-70% of her mobility. September 2020, Fleur had a surgery to remove another NEW TYPE aggressive tumor. She received radiation therapy in October and November to slow the tumor growth. From late December Fleur has been suffering from bacterial infections, which caused a lot of grief and worsened her condition badly. About a month ago the infections caused major issues, and the prosthetic skull plate had to be removed. We also had to stop her treatment, resulting recently in regrowth of the cancer. Her health deteriorated very fast, emergency shunts had to be placed, and in consultation with our oncologist Dr Gottardo we’ve decided that Fleur participates in another clinical trial with a new type of precision drug. Over the last week we’ve seen meaningful progress, but the outcome is very uncertain as this is a very novel treatment. So….. Fleur's clock is REALLY TICKING, more than ever not knowing that we are dealing with. Please listen and support our cause. It is our families wish to assure Fleur is fulfilling some of her dreams, seeing some exciting things like a DISNEY musical or event, and we are trying to organise this now through sponsors and volunteers. We’ve also decided that ALL DONATIONS we receive will go to Pirate Ship Foundation, in support of brain cancer research through the Telethon Kids Institute, and all the other kids in a similar situation as Fleur. Hi all, likely you’ve followed what’s happening on Facebook. Fleur has been through some very tough days and weeks, and we almost lost her. Working closely with our neurosurgeons and oncologists we’ve been able to get through the worst. Yesterday she was our of hospital since a month, as you know she’s been in hospital frequently since last year September, undergoing all kinds of treatments. Fleur is on novel precision drugs now, and we are hopeful we have more time with her. What the doctors are learning from Fleur’s treatment will save lives. Therefore please donate to our cause, which from hereof will go directly to the Pirate Ship Foundation charity, and Telethon. Thank you.

What was supposed to be a wonderful birthday ended up in misery. Fleur felt very unwell on the 26th of July. The same day she went into surgery to increase the drainage of her CSF. Whilst feeling better yesterday overnight things started blocking up again. Now she has both internal and external drains as a temporary measure until her new precision medicines are working. This drug is very experimental and there’s no guarantee it will work. We are entering a very daunting time with very uncertain outlook now. If the meds do their work we can expect Fleur to be around for a while. If not… there’s not many options left. Please keep supporting us. Thank you.

Fleur is back again in hospital, suffering from an infection without knowing the source, which the doctors are trying to pinpoint now. Fleur is taken off the cancer inhibitors to see if this might be one of the root causes. Pain levels are very high at the moment, she can hardly sleep. We just hope that the inflammation levels will drop gradually over the next hours and days. Fingers crossed.

We’ve been a bit quiet over the last days and for a reason. Over a period of 2 days we’ve done a lot of examinations and testing, and frankly we’re drained. Today we spent mostly relaxing and recovering, physically and mentally. The results of the MRI indicate there might be a regrowth of tumours in another area of Fleur Bakker’s brain, impeding her eyesight over time, unfortunately. To stem this new development, our doctor is considering a novel inhibitor drug of he is hoping it should have a positive impact. Fleur will be one of the first kids in Australia receiving this medication. We’ve stopped the antibiotics now after 2.5 months, Fleur’s meningitis issues have been cured, so good news on the one side. But...... Lung x-rays revealed a multitude of anomalies in Fleur’s lungs, which after assessment seem to be caused by a fungus, and fortunately this is treatable with an antifungus drug. Two steps forward, three steps back. We’re not moving in the right direction (yet), merely buying more time. Realistically we are on a slow decline.... wish we could just skip forward after COVID and that we had the chance to spend a few weeks at Disney, whilst she is still able to enjoy, see, hear, smell and feel this beautiful memory..... Wishful thinking, can we make this happen??

Fleur is home for more than a week now, getting antibiotics through IV injections. We have daily visits of a nurse from the hospital to do this, and it will likely take another 4 weeks at least. Then she will still continue with antibiotic medication for a year. You might ask why? Fleur has meningitis and this was quite critical when she was in hospital for 3 weeks. She is again on the mend and walking a bit at home. She is very keen to get back to school next week so seriously motivated to recover. Please keep supporting us, and through our fund-raiser so many other kids and their families. Share this message around to other groups and sites. Part we use to benefit Fleur the other part is donated to other charities like Telethon, Starlight and Ronald McDonald House. Please give. Thanks

It’s a bit of a waiting game now. Fleur’s inflammation markers are coming down, slowly. She is feeling better, but sometimes shooting headaches and quickly tired. Unfortunately the doctors suspect Fleur has a likelihood of getting diabetes. We will hear about this hopefully over the next days or so. Fingers crossed it’s not the case.....

We are in hospital since 29th of December, spent New Years Eve here, and we are still stuck here. Why? Fleur has a very stubborn infection which does not seem to resolve that easily. On the positive side Fleur’s fever is gone, and she feels a bit better now. Slowly slowly we are getting there but it’s wearing us all out. Fingers crossed we can leave after the weekend. Fleur’s enjoying her Barbie movies and mom loves her Facebook, games and chatting. Dad and Rose are back to work, it seems to be the new “normal”....
