Raising funds for: Jon Sanders - The Last Leg to WA #No Plastic Waste
Jon Sanders - A Living Legend, a modern day hero. And in this Covid time, we need a HERO The final leg of this, Jon's 11th Circumnavigation, needs your help. Let's repair Perie Banou 11, and sail Jon home to Fremantle. Severe unprecedented weather in the Pacific left Jon needing a new engine and new navigation gear. The engine has been purchased and the navigation gear is on order. Unfortunately this has exhausted Jon's voyage funds, with contingency monies being eaten up through Covid delays, quarantine, additional marina fees, additional food and ancillaries. We Jon's friends @ Fremantle Sailing Club are fund raising via donations, a fund raiser, silent auction, this page Jon’s account of his passage from Tahiti can be found at www.jonsanders.com where you can also find television news footage of his arrival in Bundaberg

Hi All, I’m nearly home. This little COVID-19 administration issue delayed me in Albany last week, but I did enjoy a pie. I am currently anchored in Quindalup getting ready to finish my voyage next week, arriving at FSC on Sunday 31 January. I look forward to seeing you all and I hope many of you will be on the water or at FSC when I arrive. I am so grateful to everyone who has made this voyage possible. So many amazing people and wonderful fund-raising efforts. The new motor is performing well. Thanks for all your messages. I’ve been hopping along the East Coast after arriving in Bundaberg. Some nasty weather along the NSW coast was followed by a strong front in Bass Strait that got me moving at 10kts – the hull speed is only 8kts! Then very favourable winds across the Bight to Albany. I will have sailed about 24,850nm when I tie up at FSC. The estimated eight month voyage has taken 14 months. That was not my fault – it was COVID-19. Such a different voyage to what we though when I left Fremantle in 2019 I took 100 litres of sea water at 11.00 local time every day at sea. I have taken 204 samples. When I reach FSC I will hand over to Curtin Uni the last samples from Bundaberg to Fremantle. That should be about 208 samples in total. I’ve has the last two Christmases and my 81st birthday at sea.11 times around the world. You would think I would get tired of it but I still enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. Best regards Jon

Great News Everyone. More than $45,000 has been raised to sail our favorite yachtsman home. A special thank you to all our donors, Fremantle Sailing Club members, friends & supporters of Jon Sanders for raising cash, goods and services in excess of $25,000, and to Andrew & Nicola Forrest’s Minderoo Foundation who pledged to match the support groups fundraising to $20,000. A great effort by all involved. This support and generosity means that Jon can complete the final leg of his amazing 11th circumnavigation, expecting to sail into Fremantle in early 2021. Jon has donated the Log from his 11th circumnavigation to FSC, who will proudly mount and display this piece of nautical history in its Foyer. Extracts from the Log, to be signed by Jon on his return to Fremantle, were among numerous items auctioned on the night to raise the much needed funds.
