Help Leah Access Breast Cancer Treatment

2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, wherever we are in the world. For Leah, who works for AVI in Papua New Guinea, this year has been even more difficult than expected.

At the end of June, Leah was diagnosed with breast cancer. There are no oncology facilities in PNG and the only option for Leah in PNG is a full mastectomy. Leah’s doctor has recommended she seek further treatment outside of PNG as soon as possible.

And that’s where you come in – together, we are aiming to raise funds to enable Leah to have the necessary treatment outside of PNG. Here she will be able to access case management which may allow options for tumour removal without the need for a mastectomy. And she will receive quality aftercare and any further treatment that’s required.

The funds raised will help cover the costs of flights, medical costs and accommodation.

Leah has worked for AVI since 2016, and is a much loved and respected part of our team. Her role as a recruitment officer involves working with local organisations in PNG to find out where there are capacity gaps and development needs. From there, she works with our team in Melbourne to recruit suitable Australian volunteers to support the needs of our partners.

Before working for AVI, Leah spent seven years working in development for other international organisations, which took her to some of the most remote parts of Papua New Guinea.

Leah is truly passionate about her country, and her work with AVI. She loves how her job allows her to meet people from all walks of life – people from different cultures and backgrounds. She says her time at AVI has brought much personal and professional growth.

Leah has been humbled and is very grateful for the love and support she’s received from friends, family and her colleagues, which is helping her get through this incredibly difficult time.
