About

Hello,

Well, it’s been quite a year hasn’t it? What began as the start of an exciting new decade quickly turned into something that has at times seemed like it was ripped straight from the plot of a post-apocalyptic page-turner. I think it’s fair to say we’ve all had our share of challenges, fear, uncertainty and sadness. This year’s been testing for the spirit that’s for sure, with massive pressures on our families, communities, services and charities.

One of the ways I’ve kept going through this no-go year is by running, and there are few things I love more than running long distances. I had grand plans for 2020 - but dreams of marathon holidays and personal bests soon gave way to nagging injuries and event cancellations aplenty. Despite this, I navigated the long road back to recovery and after losing a close friend to mental health issues recently, I started thinking about how I could best use all those training hours I’ve put in to create some positivity.

Last year I made an attempt to complete a 42km circuit around our beautiful Swan River sticking as close to its snaking outline as possible to take in some of the breathtaking views. It wasn’t planned. I just set off running one sunny Saturday and thought “what if I just carried on a bit further?”. It was a great adventure, but unfortunately it ended after about 37km when I ran out of water and couldn’t get one leg in front of the other - stopping at a crossing with the end only a few kilometres away. I had to call my lovely wife for an emergency pick-up in the car. The end result - a foot injury and 6 weeks off running, with another 6 regaining my fitness after that.

So here’s the deal. Coming to the end of this year I feel fitter and stronger. Probably a touch slower with my extra COVID weight, but I’m ready to take this challenge on again and this time complete the full loop, ticking a box for a solo marathon and raising some money for a good cause in the process. This is where you come in. I want you to help me through the hard yards by dipping into your (virtual) pockets and pledging a donation to this great organisation who are doing so much to help people who need support for their mental health in these challenging times.

The date for my challenge is Saturday 5th December. The planned route won’t be easy (click through photos above to see it). There are some big climbs bookending the route and the weather here in Perth promises a toasty running experience. But with your support, the right attitude and some effective chafe protection - I might just do it!

Cheers,

Marcus.
