Two years ago, at the age of 5, Ava had her very first haircut, donating her ponytail and raising over $3600 for Variety Children’s Charity. Her hair has grown (those beautiful curls never came back unfortunately) and she has been asking to donate her hair again for a while now. We’ve spoken about it a lot and I explained to Ava that she may not get the same fundraising response as last time but she is still very keen to give what she can. ? This time we are doing things a little differently. Ava will still be cutting off over 36cms of her beautiful long hair and donating it to Variety to be made into wigs for those in need, however, rather than fundraising for Variety (still a very worthy cause) Ava and I have discussed how it is important to give locally where we can. With this in mind, Ava would like all fundraising money to go towards beautiful little Rosie Bucknell. Rosie is the youngest daughter of Matilda and Andrew Bucknell here in Cootamundra and after spending a significant time in hospital undergoing tests Rosie has been diagnosed with a metabolic disorder called MPV17-related hepatocerebral mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, which affects her liver and brain and will ultimately result in liver failure. Unfortunately there is no cure or treatment beyond treating the symptoms as they present. While it’s impossible to know at this stage how Rosie’s disease will progress, individuals with this disease rarely survive beyond infancy or early childhood. While we don’t really know the family personally, I’m a strong believer in being able to give if you are in a position to do so and I’m incredibly proud of Ava for wanting to do the same. She really does have a heart of gold. I’ve spoken with Matilda and she is grateful for the support and appreciative to everyone for their generosity, allowing her to spend her time focusing on Rosie and their family. We will book Ava’s haircut for sometime in October (giving me time to get used to the idea of how grown up she will look after this one). This time, to donate the required length, Ava’s hair will be much shorter than last time.
If you aren’t in a position donate, you can still help by sharing this post. Let’s support little Rosie and her family.
You're a superstar Ava! So proud of you. Love Kristin & Joe xo
