Okko Aßmus Memorial Marathon

TLDR; I’m running a solo marathon next Sunday in memory of my friend Okko Aßmus and I’m aiming to raise money for an organisation that helped him and Alice Belle out a lot.

Months ago I signed up for the Hunsrück Marathon in Germany. I ran two last year and both times I fell just short of my goal of four hours. This time I brought in some help and signed up for online coaching with the great Sean at RunningMate. Then, obviously, COVID-19 hit and everything got cancelled. At first I was disappointed about not being able to run the race, but then I started thinking. I realised that this was an opportunity. A chance to honour a great mate of mine who passed away earlier this year and who I miss very much.

So instead of running the Hunsrück Marathon, on August 23 I’m running the Okko Aßmus Memorial Marathon. I’m running it solo around the Pfäffikersee in Switzerland, and I’m damn well going to get under that four hour mark.

I also realised that this is an opportunity to maybe raise some awareness and even a few dollars for someone that deserves it. I know everyone has been hit hard in different ways during this pandemic, but Krebsliga Zürich helped Okko and Alice out a lot. It would be amazing if we could support them back for the work they do. To make the whole thing even spicier, I’m going to pledge 100 francs for every minute I run over four hours.

As a note, sorry that I had to put this on an Australian site fundraising site. Facebook Fundraising wouldn’t work in Switzerland for this cause. I will be collecting the donations and transferring them directly to Krebsliga Zürich.
