Nungeena is a special place that is nestled on 16 acres in the foothills of Mt Beerwah, mother mountain of the Glasshouse Mountains family group. This is significant to the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara country-men and women and neighbouring peoples. The tranquil and peaceful surroundings are in tune with Nungeena's goals to provide a base for women to participate in activities that will help to empower themselves, families and communities for a better, harmonious world. Nungeena offers culturally appropriate program activities, school and group excursions, workshops, referral services and training activities.
We are upgrading our site to provide more amenities, laundry and a water treatment plant to make our activities more ecologically sustainable and invite more community groups to practice and experience a deeper connection with Aboriginal culture.
We have the support of a number of government and non-government partners such as the Sunshine Coast Council and First Languages Australia to build our cultural programs and facilities. We are still hoping to co-fund many of these programs to make sure our upgrades include state-of-art facilities for our Elders' disability access points and mothers' facilities. A children's program will offer employment to mob and a way for our volunteers who are parents to contribute more often to their communities.
With this money, we can co-fund designs for larger government grants, provide small administrative and cultural social-enterprise seed funding to generate more sustainable income. A small amount will go towards upgrading our facility to Covid-19 hygiene standards (dishwasher, wash basins and treatment plant) so we can re-open the doors. Any amount of this funding will support our long-term plans to 'weave our new dreaming'.
Together we can:
EMPOWER women, families and communities
ENHANCE traditional practices and exchange
DEVELOP training and employment pathways
PRESERVE relationships, land, habitat and language
PROMOTE business and facilities
With love and gratitude from Mother Mountain,
The Nungeena Elders Group.
