Second Chance Animal Rescue Community Outreach Program

Help us support disadvatanged members of the community and their pets.

The rate of unemployment in our local community is currently running at 6%, that's higher than the Melbourne average.

3 in every 5 households own a pet with a large number of these families  struggling financially and lacking the means to support and care for their animals effectively.

At SCAR we experience this firsthand with the amount of animals abandoned, needing to be rehomed or requiring urgent surgery.

The SCAR Pet Outreach Program assists disadvantaged members in our community to help their pets, BEFORE they are unwell, dumped, or surrendered.

HOW WE HELP

Second Chance currently runs the Outreach Program from our Animal Hospital in Craigieburn and to date we have assisted over 500 disadvantaged families and their pets by offering free and heavily subsidised desexing procedures, microchipping, vaccinations and free pet food. 

Too often we hear heartbreaking stories of pet owners going without food themselves in order to make sure their animals are fed first. For many of these people their companion pets are their only source of regular company so try to support these pet owners before they have to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their animals or euthanise simply because they cant afford their health care.

Pet ownership has been linked to huge health benefits including lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, lower rates of depression and a better sense of well-being.  Pets provide their owners with companionship and the opportunity to socialise with other pet owners and neighbours, which can boost self esteem, decrease loneliness and provide purpose.
