Tama has Autism, learning difficulties, and high levels of anxiety accompanied by OCD. Autism for her also means hyper mobility, poor co-ordination and low muscle tone which can make some seemingly simple tasks and activities much more difficult for her.
After our Labrador passed away in 2018 she began having severe anxiety attacks and sensory overloads that mimicked seizures. These are likely to re-occur when she becomes too overwhelmed.
She has attended long term therapy with a speech therapist, OT and specialist psychologist & psychiatrist, however a therapy dog would assist greatly with her anxiety, stimming when she becomes overwhelmed, and tasks which can be difficult for her. Road sense and safety is also still an issue as she is easily distracted.
The therapy dog will be used to assist in these and many other areas, to aide Tama in becoming a more independent young adult.
We have set the monetary goal for the cost of the dog itself, (through a registered recommended assistance dog breeder) monthly training visits with the assessor, and the assessment fee, as I will be doing the day to day training of the dog myself, (I have Cert III in dog training and behaviour) but I am going to need regular ongoing help by someone experienced and qualified specifically in assistance dog training, so we will be working regularly with Kay at Wagamuffins.
All funds raised will go towards obtaining and training the assistance dog. 🐾
