This racing season I am raising money for The Coalition For The Protection of Racehorses.
Why not donate $5, $10, or $20 instead of betting this year?
For those who haven't already seen The Final Race, which aired on ABC's 7:30 last week, you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp-ALoBRW20
The racing industry produces too many horses, of which only a very small minority are winners.
Even those who bring in substantial amounts of money lack the longevity necessary to remain in the industry. The sad, abhorrent truth, is that a large portion of these animals (an estimated minimum of 4000 per year in NSW) and up in knackeries and slaughterhouses.
The conditions our dear equine friends face in these institutions is not only sickening, but illegal. They are tormented, tortured, physically abused, and brutally murdered. Much of their meat is then sold to the Greyhound industry.
As someone who has been involved in animal activism for many years, I am very used to seeing footage from slaughterhouses, but such video never fails to shake me to my core for days to come. I know that so many of you feel the same, and would feel the same if you took the time to open your eyes, and hearts, to these used, abused, and neglected souls. While the treatment of these horses is unfortunately not unique in terms of the kind of fates most farmed animals in our country suffer, it is no less inexcusable.
I call on you to say #nuptothecup this year, and to instead make a small donation to a charity or rescue group dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and safely rehoming unwanted racehorses.
The Coalition For The Protection of Racehorses is a group that advocates for the rights of horses, for industry change, and for protection. I would love to provide them with some support this racing season.
This is from April and me as her Swedish card won’t work! Xx
