Five and a half million international tourists each year travel to Bali and almost all (roughly 90%) spend their Bali holiday in the southern tourist districts of Nusa Dua, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur with some venturing towards the centre of the island to the arts and crafts village of Ubud.

But there is a part of Bali where mainstream tourism doesn't touch, places where until only a few years ago rarely had any interactions with westerners. The place is North East Bali in the Karangasem and East Buleleng regencies (districts).

The people that live here are extremely poor and even in "normal" times do it very tough, many (up to 130,000) were displaced into shelters and camps following the Mt Agung eruptions and now with tens of thousands returning north to their villages due to the shutdown of the tourism industry in the south by the COVID-19 pandemic more than ever these typically proud people desperately need your help as village infrastructures are overwhelmed by the sudden return of all these people to their ancestral homes and families for support.
