Our Mum, Roberta Russell, has been accepted to undergo stem cell treatment (HSCT) in Russia in order to treat her Multiple Sclerosis (MS). There is a 75.5% success rate in this treatment.
In April 2008, Mum was diagnosed with MS. Over the past 11 years, and particularly the past year, the illness has severely affected her mobility and over all her quality of life. The HSCT will provide Mum with an opportunity to gain her life back by stopping the progression of MS and hopefully reversing some of the disability it has caused. With the current rate of progression in Mum's illness it won't be long before she is unable to undergo the treatment.
The treatment cost is about €45 000 (which is approximately $74 000 AUD) and Mum would have to be in Moscow for 30-36 days to receive treatment. The HSCT process is extremely intensive but has the potential to positively change Mum's life for good. At the moment, Mum's treatment date is April 6 2020.
I think we speak for anyone who knows Mum when we say she is an inspiration. Having lived with Multiple Sclerosis for over a decade, she has always remained relentlessly positive, generous and dignified despite all the privileges of life it has taken away. The thought of Mum potentially being able to walk unaided again and have some of her independence restored fills us all with hope for a better future for her. There is no one who deserves this chance more than our beautiful Mum who we love and admire so dearly and have so much to thank for in our lives.
We have set up this page to give anyone whose life Mum has touched the opportunity to help as we prepare to embark on this journey with her. No amount is too small and any contribution will be gratefully received. We are hoping to fundraise in other ways and will be sure to update everyone on any developments. If anyone has any questions or even fundraising ideas for us please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for taking the time to read this page and remember to cuddle your Mum <3
