The 7th of September is the beginning of national Child Protection Week. During the whole month of September Alderley Child Safety Office is trying to raise as much money as we can for the wonderful Pyjama foundation. In Australia there are over 51,000 children are living in out of home care in the foster care system, and have often experienced child abuse, trauma and neglect. Children in the foster care system also has the worst educational outcomes of any group of children in Australia. 92% of children in care have below average reading skills by the time they are 7 years of age, and it is a struggle for them to catch up 75% of children in care are not completing high school The Pyjama Foundation empowers children in Foster Care with learning, life skills and confidence to change the direction of their lives. Volunteers called Pyjama Angels are matched with a child in care, and spend one hour a week focusing on learning based activities. Pyjama Angels read books aloud, play educational games, and help children with their homework. In that time, they demonstrate that this child is valued and loved. Every child has the right to reach their full potential and follow their dreams.
The Pyjama Foundation screen and train volunteers called Pyjama Angels who are matched with a child in foster care. They visit the same child every week, for 1.5 hours to read books aloud, play educational games and work on their numeracy skills.
