Umguza School is an institution located on the outskirts of Bulawayo Zimbabwe. Infrastructure within the school and surrounding are poor and have been deteriorating for the last decade. The school is isolated being in the middle of bushland away from the CBD. This means that transport to and from school is difficult to come by. The school lacks basic resources that are essential for learning and lacks the basic sanitary infrastructure to ensure firstly that children are receiving a well-cultivated education but also that they are safe from disease and healthy at school. In addition to this, the school lacks electricity and water and they are in a dispute with the local city council over who owns the land over which the school is built. This has crippled the schools teaching ability and also their ability to ensure students are well hydrated and feel safe.
Our first initiative is a nutrition program that provides students with free hot lunches. A majority of the students that go to Umguza are extremely malnourished. Students walk long distances to get to school every day without eating prior nor having food to sustain themselves for the rest of the day. Students are often hungry which hinders their ability to learn, play and develop confidence in who they are. The provision of free food services for all students at Umguza is one of our three main priorities in ensuring students are empowered and enlivened by the opportunities and benefits they are given through our projects so that they may be enriched and healthy in order to become the students/people that they want to be. At our current capacity, we have only been going to school once a week, to provide these lunches. As we grow and gain capital we intend to make more frequent visits.
The cost of each visit is around 108AUD and is subject to change due to rapid inflation in Zimbabwe. A cost breakdown can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AUy2MiWBwPz0yBwVcK9R8gKG4-5_DOKFHva9KjkGa2I/edit?usp=sharing
