Did you know that in 1 year, 1 female cat can become 32 cats! Those statistics make our fur stand on end and we are determined to end the cycle of stray cat breeding.
Colonies of stray cats form, when un-desexed, domestic cats and kittens get tossed to the curb and go looking for food and shelter. The female cats, often pregnant, go searching for a place that is warm and dry to nest and birth their babies. These cats end up in someone’s yard where the safely give birth, but now the family has multiplied and the responsibility of feeding this family belongs to another community member. This is a scenario that we hear 10 times a day. And it must end.
Maggie’s Rescue is focused on providing support and advice to people dealing with these stray cats. We recognise the importance of de-sexing animals but for many people it can cause financial strain. Our De-sex Bank is all about helping these people in the community by offering no cost, or low cost de-sexing through our amazing partnering vets. In 2017/2018 Maggie’s directly funded the de-sexing of over 220 community cats. We aim to double this number, or triple if we can.
The cost to de-sex :
One male cat is roughly $100 and female cat approx. $150.
Dogs between $150 and $350, depending on size and sex.
These animals also need a day to recover from their surgery, so they often stay with our vet or in a foster carers home. These costs all adds up.
Our De-sex Bank is depleted, can you help us refill it and help us end the cycle of breeding??
