For those of you who have no idea what the Mongol Rally is well read on…myself and my husband Peter ,Alison (from the UK) and Ron Slatcher (aka The Travelling Farts Do Mongolia) are driving 10,000 plus miles in a hideously inappropriate car from the UK to Russia, via Mongolia, to raise money for a couple of charities including Melanoma Institute Australia. A cause that is close to our heart. My little sister Victoria, my only sibling was diagnosed with Melanoma early in 2011. We were all in shock! Vick was very positive and determined to fight the disease. She had metastases and endured and survived 2 operations, a mastectomy and a partial pancreatectomy. Vick tried alternate therapies (including treatment in Mexico), medical treatment and participated in clinical trials. Thankfully a new chemotherapy drug gave her some hope and time and prolonged her life for 1 year. In that time she travelled to Tasmania, New Zealand and went on a cruise for her honeymoon. Vick was a vibrant 52 years young who loved life , her grandchildren, family and friends. During her illness she married a beautiful man the love of her life. She was so happy on her wedding day. Vick kept her battle going and she never lost hope or complained right to the very end. Even when she was weak, sick and in unbearable pain she went to Uluru to celebrate her first and only wedding anniversary with her devoted husband. She died one month later on the 17 October 2013 with her family by her side holding her hand. This is Victoria’s Melanoma story. It could be anyone of our stories. I miss her everyday. Her quirky sense of humour and her wonderful beaming smile. I know she will be with us all the way on the Mongol Rally.
