Little Wonder is the Parents’ Fundraising and Support Committee for RPA Newborn Intensive Care.
RPA Newborn Care is the intensive care unit for newborn babies at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, providing the highest level of neonatal intensive care available in Australia. RPA Newborn Care looks after more than 950 sick and premature babies each year. RPA Newborn Care provides intensive care services for babies born at RPA but also for babies transferred there from hospitals without the same high level of intensive care facilities.
Little Wonder is comprised of a group of volunteer parents who have experienced the RPA Newborn Care journey first hand. Under the guidance of the Fundraising Manager at RPA Newborn Care, Little Wonder started work in late 2009 to raise funds to support the unit and the parents of babies in the hospital. Our efforts as a way of giving back to the unit that saved our own babies and allowed them to prosper.
Current projects requiring funding include:
1. The Little Star Beads program offers children little rewards for their medical procedures in the form of unique beads. The beads are strung together to create a string of beads that will tell the story of each child’s personal, medical journey.
2. Supply of Little Wonder "Basics" Bags - these bags are made by us and provided to families that arrive at RPA NICU with nothing. Many times having a premature baby is a surprise for parents. Our bags give these families everything they need to get by for their first days at RPA.
3. Supply of Little Wonder Sibling Bags - being a new big brother or sister to a sick bub is a very traumatic time for children. Our sibling bags are made and given to the siblings of NICU bubs. They contain a special message of congratulations and some 'quiet time' activities that can be done whilst visiting their new baby brother or sister.
Little Wonder also raises funds to support the unit by way of purchasing equipment and resources. Some of our past purchases include a humidicrib, jaundice meters, open-air cribs, the refurbishment of an expressing room so mums can have a comfortable and modern space to express milk for their bubs, milk warmers, training devices, nursing chairs and other specialised medical equipment.
We rely heavily on our local community to help us raise awareness and support RPA NICU. Any donation is greatly appreciated.
Little Wonder is a hospital approved not for profit fundraising committee for RPA Newborn Care and does not have DGR status. All donations will go directly to RPA Newborn Care and be used to provide resources and equipment to the unit and the babies and families they support.
